Volleyball squad off to 3-0 start
The Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team has made it three straight wins out of the blocks. Last Tuesday (Sept. 4), the Panthers traveled to Norwood Young America, where they defeated the rival Central Raiders in four games (25-14, 18-25, 25-16, 25-16). All-Wright County Conference middle-blocker Clarissa Ober, a 6-1 senior, led the GSL attack with 21 kill hits, including the 1,000th in her splendid career. Ober also notched six solo blocks. Courtney Lemke, another of GSL’s trio of decorated captains, charted 27 set assists and eventually closed out the match with a service ace. As a result, the Panthers took marks of 1-0 (WCC) and 3-0 (all matches) into last night’s (Sept. 11) league match at Mound-Westonka. GSL’s next home match is Thursday (7 p.m.) with Dassel-Cokato. Panthers tumble to Tigers, 35-13
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor year ago when Glencoe-Silver Lake and Hutchinson battled on a football field, Tigers quarterback McKinley Anderson hurled touchdown passes of 43 and 59 yards, starting Hutch toward a 20-16 victory. Preparing his 2012 team for Anderson and the Tigers last week, GSL head coach Scott Tschimperle remembered the long plays. “We can’t give them the big pass again,” he said. But it’s something easier said than done. Last Friday at S.R. Knutson Field, after GSL opened the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns — turning a 21-0 halftime deficit into a one-possession game while whipping Panther fans into a frenzy — Anderson struck again. Needing eight yards on second down from the Hutch 20, Anderson and speedy wide receiver Mitch Petersen teamed for 78. Moments later, Anderson was in the GSL end zone, and it was the Hutch rooters making all the noise. The Tigers went on to claim a 3513 win — their second in two starts. GSL, on the other hand, dropped to 1-1. Unofficial statistics support the scoreboard’s claim of Hutchinson being the superior team on this night. On a crisp September evening when turnovers were one apiece, the Tigers outgained GSL on the ground (234 yards to 112), through the air (157 to 92) and in total (60 plays for 391 yards to 47 for 204).

A gang of Tiger tacklers stymie GSL fullback Dalton Clouse (46). Indeed, Hutch seemed to get the better of the blocking and tackling. *** The big play of the first half was another pass completion by McKinley Anderson. After Hutch used 4 minutes and 21 seconds of clock to march 80 yards in 11 plays and post seven points with its first possession, GSL’s defense rose up the next time the Tigers got the ball. On fourth down at its 46, and needing nine yards, Hutchinson positioned itself to punt. However, instead of launching the ball all the way back to the punter, the Tigers long-snapper zipped it to

Legendary Buz Rumrill earns yet another honor
Buz Rumrill is entering another hall of fame. The legendary Silver Lake and GSL coach will be inducted into the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association (MSHSCA) hall Saturday evening, Oct. 13. The place is the Crown Plaza River Front Hotel, St. Paul. Tickets are $25 each and may be purchased by contacting the MSHSCA offices at (218) 847-6796, or Jim Baker at (651) 357-2937. Rumrill is a 1957 graduate of Madison (S.D.) High School and a 1962 graduate of General Beadle State Teachers College — now Dakota State University. He played four years of college football. His career as a high school football coach consists of 24 years at old Silver Lake and five more at Glencoe-Silver Lake. Eight of his teams played in the state tournament, including Silver Lake’s state champions of 1983 and 1987, as well as Silver Lake’s state runners-up of 1984 and 1986. Rumrilll also coached basketball (16 years), track and field (4) and baseball (1) teams at Silver Lake/GSL. In all, he received 26 coach-ofthe-year awards, including 15 conference, nine section and two state. Now retired, he and wife Georgia still reside in Silver Lake. In 2006, he was one of the first class of (five) inductees into the GSL Hall of Fame. Previously, he was inducted into the Minnesota High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame — class of 1999. *** Entering the MSHSCA hall with Rumrill in October 2012 are: Carolyn Hummel (Lakefield and Jackson County Central volleyball); Dave Hylla (Proctor football); Bill Quenette (Moorhead basketball); Tom Saterdalen (Bloomington Jefferson hockey), and Gary Schuler (Warren- Alvarado-Oslo, and Fergus Falls.) Family, friends and former players are invited to attend.

Girls’ soccer team notches 1st WCC win in 5 years
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Kaitlyn Cohrs scored a pair of goals, Kenzie Boozikee added an insurance tally, and goalie Brianna Elsing notched a shutout, as the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team defeated host Hutchinson, 3-0, last Thursday. The victory was GSL’s second of the current season, and its first in the Wright County Conference over the last five years. “It’s nice to get a win in the conference,” said Cohrs, a forward and one of the Panthers’ four senior captains. She lauded her teammates on the shutout. “It was a whole team effort tonight,” Cohrs said. “Our goalie did great. Our defense did great.” Cohrs was pretty good herself. In the 28th minute of a scoreless match, Cohrs made a strong advance toward the top of the Hutchinson box, where she was run over by a too aggressive Tiger defender. GSL was awarded a free kick as a result of the penalty, and Cohrs — from about 25 yards out — responded by thumping the ball through a “gap” in Hutchinson’s wall of defenders and past the goalie. The 1-0 score stood up for the remainder of the first half and first 20 minutes of the second half. But with 19:20 to go, Cohrs struck again. After capturing a Hutch turnover, she moved with the ball to the top of the box, where she put her right foot into another 25-yard shot. It, too, bent perfectly, over the goalie’s reach; then neatly under the cross bar — just the way Cohrs practices her shot with coach Zach Otto-Fisher for 20 minutes prior to every Panthers match. Boozikee, a talented eighth-grader, got behind the Hutchinson defense while speeding down her right wing late in the 66th minute, controlled a pass and angled a nifty shot into the back of the net. It was 3-0; plenty of support for Elsing and GSL’s active defenders — such as senior Courtney Neubarth, junior Frances Zuniga and sophomore Yocelyn Lopez.

Boys 9th, girls 13th at Gerry Smith Invitational cross country meet
GSL’s boys placed ninth out of 28 complete cross-country teams at last Thursday’s (Sept. 6) Gerry Smith Invitational, which was run on the Montgomery National Golf Club course. The Panther girls finished 13th out of 24 full teams. Individually for Glencoe-Silver Lake, senior Jalen Metcalf placed 18th overall with a 5-kilometer time of 17 minutes, 34.2 seconds. Sophomores Brandon Richter (17:36.1) and Jac Chelman (17:50.9) were right on Metcalf ’s heels, placing 19th and 25th, respectively. Quite a gap existed between Chelman and GSL’s fourth runner, sophomore Isiah Herout, who placed 75th in 18:58,1, Yet another 10thgrader, Garrett Ober, rounded out GSL’s first five. Ober was 88th in 19:10.9. James Tichy, a junior, helped the GSL boys’ JV finish fourth as a team, placing fourth in the individual standings with a time of 19:08.6. Teammate Tanner Konen, a senior, was 10th in 19:34.6. In the girls’ varsity division, GSL junior Tori Burr placed 12th overall with a 4k time of 15 minutes, 58.6 seconds. The other Panthers contributing to GSL’s team score were junior Kaylee Venier (48th, 17:17.5), junior Mary Roach (97th, 18:42.9), senior Kaitlyn Boesche (103rd, 18:52.2) and sophomore Taylor Venier (115th, 19:30.2). Metcalf improved his time at the 2011 Montgomery (Redbird) meet (18:10.0) by more than 35 seconds. The sixth and seventh runners on GSL’s varsity were seniors Kyle Polzin (19:23.6) and Tyler Zajicek (19:29.4). Top girls’ teams: 1.Shakopee 92; 2.Prior Lake 93; 3.Waseca 122; 4.Mahtomedi 158; 5.USC-Wells 161. 6.New Prague 175; 7.Blake 208; 8.Belle Plaine 231; 9.Waconia 232; 10.Mountain Lake 254. 11.Fairmont 327; 12.Tri-City United 359; 13.GSL 375; 14.Cannon Falls 381; 15.St.James 392. 24 teams in all. She also noted Lemke’s “soft hands,” and thought GSL’s offense was “just on fire” that first game. After dropping the second game, the Panthers regained their winning form. “Our back row play from Cortney Konen, Krissy Garbers, Lexi Kerslake, and Emily Muetzel improved throughout the match,” Schwirtz said. Lemke and junior middlehitter Steph Klockmann charted six kills apiece. Garbers added four.

one of the middle guys. He turned out to be McKinley Anderson, who fired a 22yard completion to a slanting Jordan Yira — against fairly tight GSL coverage. From the GSL 32, the Tigers needed five more plays to score — completing a 12-play, 66-yard march that consumed 3:35. Hutchinson also scored seven points on its third possession — a 13-play grinder that included two conversions on third down, one on fourth down and ate up 5:39 of clock. But GSL, which never moved the chains more than once on any of its first-half possessions, recharged its batteries at halftime. *** Hutchinson received the ball to start the second half, but after taking a seconddown snap, Anderson whistled a pass that was picked off in front of the Tigers bench by Ethan Maass, the Panthers’ All-Wright County Conference safety. From the Hutch 41, GSL’s QB named Anderson, first name Keaton, hooked up with Ryan Kuester on a 33yard pass play to the 8. On fourth down from the 7, Keaton Anderson threw a lefty’s strike to end Reed Dunbar, who was in the Hutchinson end zone. The Tigers ran the ball three times for seven stripes; then punted it back to the Panthers, who promptly set off on an 80-yard TD march. The touchdown was a 31yard dash to the right pylon by speedy Jake Stuedemann. With 3:17 remaining in the third quarter, GSL trailed 2113 —and had the momentum. ***** — Hutchinson’s Tory Adams (18 carries for 134 yards) was the game’s top rusher. Stuedemann (10 for 68) led the Panthers. Dalton Clouse ran 12 times for 34 yards, Ryan Kuester had four carries for 15 yards. Dunbar led the receivers with four catches for 48 yards and a TD. Kuester caught three passes for 44 yards; Clouse had two catches for three yards; and Stuedemann had one catch for one yard. Keaton Anderson completed 10 of 16 attempts for 95 yards and one TD. Defensively, Ray Eberhard was in on 13 tackles, five of them solo tackles. Carter Pinske had 11 tackles, five of them solos, and Maass had 10 tackles, eight of them solos. Keenan Mehlos had the Panthers’ lone sack for the game. ***** — Next for GSL is a Friday home game with 2-0 Annandale. The Cardinals have defeated Waconia (30-23) and Delano (20-19). Also last week, (1-1) Holy Family Catholic defeated (11) Litchfield, 36-17; (2-0) New London-Spicer topped (0-2) Waconia, 21-14; and (11) Orono edged (0-2) DasselCokato, 12-9.

Police were called to Highway 212 and Morningside Avenue at 1:09 a.m., Sunday, when it was reported a person was yelling and screaming “Take me to jail. hood programs by the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Parent Aware is a new rating system being rolled out gradually throughout Minnesota. Currently, it is being implemented in a few communities, which have also been pre-selected for Race to the Top scholarships and program grants. Accredited early childhood programs (National Association for the Education of Young Children accreditation and others) and school-based school readiness programs were notified that they could participate in a simplified process due to the high quality standards, research based curriculum, and baccalaureate or higher educated staff. GSL School Readiness meets these requirements by implementing High Scope Curriculum, Work Sampling System of Assessment, and providing continuing education opportunities for staff. Britta Aldrich is the School Readiness teacher at GSL schools. The GSL School Readiness program is located in the Helen Baker ECFE Addition in Glencoe. The rating is good for two years and will need to be reapplied for in 2014. The Parent Aware Rating System is not scheduled to be implemented in McLeod County for child care providers to participate until 2014-15. The purpose of the star rating system is to assist parents in choosing high-quality child care and early childhood programs for their children, and for programs to demonstrate that they are using research based best practices for care and preparing children for kindergarten.
