Monahan takes charge of Panther girls’ hoops
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
Glencoe-Silver Lake High
School did not have to look
very far to find its new head
girls’ basketball coach.
Jeff Monahan, the Panthers’
assistant varsity coach and
junior varsity head coach for
the past three seasons, was officially elevated to varsity
head coach after the GSL
school board approved the decision at its meeting on Monday, Sept. 12.
“It’s very exciting for me
personally,” Monahan said.
“(Former head coach Zach
Otto-Fisher) got this program
going in the right direction
and this is a great opportunity
for me to keep this ship headed in the same direction.”
Monahan said he was
“shocked” when Otto-Fisher
called him in August to say
that he was leaving the Panthers to assume the position of
assistant coach with the Uni-
versity of Wisconsin-Superior
womens’ collegiate basketball
team.
“I was his second call, right
after Maddie,” Monahan said,
referring to his daughter and
Panthers top-scoring guard
Maddie Monahan.
While surprised, Jeff Monahan admitted that the thought
of filling Otto-Fisher’s shoes
intrigued him on several levels.
“A lot of people don’t know
this, but I’ve been a part of
this program for the past
seven years,” Monahan said.
“I started coaching the current
sophomores and juniors back
when they were part of the
fourth- and fifth-grade team.
“Any of the girls currently
in seventh through 12th grade,
I’ve coached each of them for
at least one year.”
As for what he brings to the
varsity level, Monahan said
that he wants to continue
down the path previously
blazed by Otto-Fisher, but
also bring his own style to the
position as well.
“I want these girls to hustle,
play hard, play together and
have fun,” he said. “I want us
to be a defensive team and to
create our offense out of our
defense.”
Monahan inherits a squad
with lofty expectations this
coming fall. Led by Maddie
Monahan, GSL’s all-time
leading girls’ basketball scorer, the team boasts and experienced roster that includes
longtime varsity contributors
Molli Cacka, Rachael Popp,
Mckenna Monahan, Zoe
Christensen and Miranda
Grack.
“The team we have in
place, as well as the younger
kids coming up gives us a
chance to be very successful,”
he said. “I think this team
should be playing in the section finals this season.”

Sibley East, Hutchinson

Connor Kantack celebrated with teammates Kyle
Christensen (1) and Carsen Streich (22) after his 20yard touchdown reception gave the Glencoe-Silver
Lake football team a 7-0 lead over Hutchinson on
Friday, Sept. 9. The Tigers rallied, however, and won
the game 28-14.
Hutch tops GSL in rivalry game
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
It is the last time that
Glencoe-Silver Lake and
Hutchinson will meet on a
football field for at least the
next two years – and possibly
much longer – and with the
Tigers claiming a 28-14 victory on Friday, Sept. 9 at
Stevens Seminary Stadium,
Hutch could have bragging
rights for quite some time.
“It stinks,” GSL head
coach Scott Tschimperle said
of Hutchinson disappearing

Taylor Schauer got a well-earned breather after
recording the second of his two interceptions
against Hutchinson on Friday, Sept. 9.
from the Panthers’ schedule
due to the Minnesota State
High School League’s redistricting to take place after
this season. “We are only 15
miles from each other and
won’t play. Hopefully, it’s a
short-term thing.”
As for Friday’s final-fornow meeting, the two sides
played with an intensity and
fortitude that fit the gravity
of the contest.
Glencoe-Silver Lake struck
first, marching down the field
on a 55-yard drive that took
nearly five minutes before
quarterback Luke Frahm
found wide receiver Connor
Kantack in the middle of the
end zone for a leaping touchdown grab that put the hosts
up 7-0 on kicker/lineman
Joey Cullen’s extra point.
However, the Tigers roared
back downfield on a 90-second, five-play touchdown
drive of their own to draw
within 7-6 after a failed
extra-point conversion effort.
The first quarter ended
with GSL still on top, but
Hutchinson took the lead
early in the second quarter
following an 88-yard, 12play drive to assume a 14-7
edge after a successful twopoint conversion.
“It took us a couple of series to get used to their
speed,” Tschimperle said.
“Hutch really took us by
storm at first, but our kids
came around.”
With both defenses making
stops, it appeared the contest
would head to halftime at 147.
It did, but not before one
last blast of excitement as
Taylor Schauer intercepted a
Hutchinson pass deep in Panthers territory and nearly returned it for a GSL touchdown until he was tackled by
Tigers running back Isaac
Nelson at the Hutch fouryard line.
“I thought that he just
might score there,” Tschimperle said. “But 6 (Nelson’s
number) wasn’t going to let
that happen.”
A near miss having gone
by the boards, GSL went into
halftime still down a score,
but emboldened in their ability to hang with Hutch.
The Panther defense forced
Hutchinson into a three-andout on the opening possession of the second half; following that stop, the GSL offense knotted up the contest
at 14-14 on a touchdown
plunge by Carsen Streich and
a Cullen extra point.
Cullen is 5-for-5 on extra
points this season, bringing
stability to what at times has
been a tumultuous aspect of
the Panthers’ game.
“Don’t change a thing,”
Tschimperle said. “He’s perfect so far in an area that has
caused us troubles in the
past.”

The Glencoe-Silver Lake
volleyball team kept its record
at .500 on the season and secured an important victory
over a sectional opponent by
splitting its two games last
week.
After claiming its first victory of the season against host
Norwood Young America to
close out August, the Panthers
opened September by improving to 2-0 against teams from
Section 2AA by sweeping
host Sibley East 25-23, 25-21,
25-19 on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Maddie Monahan led the
way for GSL with nine kills
and also posted 11 digs, two
assists and one service ace.
Rhyan Herrmann also registered seven kills with 13
digs, while Rachael Popp led
the Panthers with 14 digs and
two service aces. Lexi Hansch
put up 10 digs.
The match marked a return
to the court for Jessica
Lemke, who missed out on
GSL’s first two contests due
to a sprained ankle. She tallied nine assists and five digs
on the night.
“It was great being out on
the court and being more involved as a teammate,”
Lemke said. “It's hard to sit
and cheer on the bench when
you want to be on the court
and making plays.”
The GSL High School gymnasium was electric two
nights later as the Panthers
hosted main rival Hutchinson
in front of a standing-room
only crowd.
While the hosts came out
charged up, the Tigers held on
during a spirited first game
and emerged with a 25-18
victory.
Game two remained close
throughout, with GSL holding
a brief lead during the middle
points before Hutch rallied
and held fast to an eventual
25-20 win.
Any Tiger hopes of a sweep
were dashed by a proud Panther effort in the third game as
GSL built a slim lead early
and held on throughout to
claim a measure of momentum with a 25-21triumph.
However, in the end, it was
the visitors that went home
happy. Hutchinson seized a 60 lead to open the fourth
game and, battling against a
defiant Panther effort, held on
for a slim 25-23 victory that
claimed the match three
games to one.
“Hutch is always a strong
team, but we played very well
against them,” Lemke said.”
We might not have come out
with a win but we did play
hard and never gave up. We
were down by six points and
pulled together on the floor
and fought to get back in to
the game. It made us a strong
team.”

The Glencoe-Silver Lake
girls’ soccer team fell to 2-3
on the season last week after
back-to-back shutout losses
at home to Mankato Loyola
and Holy Family Catholic.
After opening the season
with consecutive 4-0 wins at
Worthington and Rocori, the
Panthers have yet to score a
goal on their home field at
Stevens Seminary Stadium
as the 7-0 loss to the Crusaders and 8-0 setback
against the Fire on Sept. 6
and 8, respectively, compounded a 7-0 defeat against
Mound Westonka on Sept. 1.
GSL goalkeeper Destiney
Exsted was busy in the nets
against Holy Family, making
30 saves. She now has 57
saves total against Wright
County Conference foes.
The Panthers were back
on the road with a matchup
at Waconia on Tuesday,
Sept. 13, after the Chronicle
went to press. GSL returns
home on Thursday against
Watertown-Mayer.

GSL youth footballers get a
taste of ‘Friday Night Lights’
Four squads of Glencoe-Silver Lake Community Education youth footballers from the fifth- and sixthgrade programs hit the big time during halftime of the
GSL/Hutchinson varsity game on Friday, Sept. 9. Pictured above, Will Wanous broke into the open field

paced GSL, as she also
notched 19 digs and one
service ace. Lemke’s 22 assists led the Panthers and she
also posted 14 digs and five
kills.
Popp’s 22 digs were tops
for the hosts, while she
added eight kills to the home
total. Hansch had a team-
best two service aces with 15
assists and 19 digs.
The Panthers hosted
Mayer Lutheran on Tuesday,
Sept. 13, after the Chronicle
went to press, and will play
at Litchfield Thursday night
before competing in the Heritage Christian Tournament
in Maple Grove this week-
end.
Following their first tournament of the season, GSL
returns home to take on
Rockford on Thursday, Sept.
22.
“There’s a lot of season
left to become stronger as an
all-around team,” Lemke
said.

kind, charging back down
field to take the lead for good
on Christian Kurth’s third
touchdown of the game to
head into the fourth quarter
with a 21-14 edge on the Panthers.
A second Schauer interception, this time of an option
toss near the Tigers goal line,
temporarily prevented the visitors from extending their
lead.
However, after GSL came
up short on its next drive,
turning the ball over on downs
at the Hutch 21, the Tigers expanded their edge to the
would-be final margin of 14
points on three Nelson runs of
70, 4 and 5 yards to go up 2814 with just over three minutes remaining in the contest.
The Panthers’ final drive
ended in a fumble and a
turnover before Hutchinson
ran out the remaining moments of the game before
Tiger players headed onto the
field to retrieve the “Battle of
the Cats” trophy that had
resided in Glencoe since the
Panthers win last autumn.
Tschimperle hopes that the
trophy does not become a permanent Hutchinson resident.
“It’s disappointing that we
won’t be playing them for a
while,” he said. “These are
two communities that really
support and follow their
teams.
“The atmosphere and the
spirit of rivalry was really
great at Friday’s game, and I
think we’re all going to miss
that.”
Statistically, Spencer Lepel
led the way with 69 yards on
nine drive-sustaining carries.
Streich logged 63 yards and
one score on 15 carries, while
Michael Forar ran 17 times
for 55 yards.
Frahm completed six of 11
passes for 47 yards, including
the 20-yard touchdown toss to
Kantack, four throws to Kyle
Christensen for 23 yards and
one throw to Lepel for four
yards.
Defensively, Ben Donnay
logged a team-high 13 tackles,
followed by Peyton Sell with
11 tackles. Four of the tackles
for both Donnay and Sell
were solo stops.
Tyler Ehrke had nine total
tackles, seven of which were
solo.
The Panthers now head out
for their first road game of the
season, with a trip to Annandale on the schedule for this
Friday night.
The Cardinals are 1-1 on
the season, though undefeated
against Minnesota teams. Annandale lost to visiting Pierz,
South Dakota by a 26-6 score
on Sept. 2, and then pounded
Holy Family Catholic 47-16
on Sept. 9.
“Annandale is a very good
team that always gives us fits
on defense,” Tschimperle said.
“They have a new and very
effective passer at quarterback
and a wide receiver that catches everything.”

week for a month. I studied and practiced on my own, and sometimes it was a real struggle to do what I needed to do. Little by
little I became more comfortable with the language. During that time of struggle and learning, I often thought of Pentecost with
envy. The apostles didn’t have to study, struggle or make horrendous errors, but were given the gift of being able to speak in
whatever language was necessary at the time. I longed to be filled with that gift of the Holy Spirit. Any of you who have tried to
learn a new language can understand those feelings.
We sometimes forget exactly what the gift that the apostles received was. It was not the gift of being able to converse easily
in a language they did not know, it was not a sudden opening of their intellects to the intricacies of another language, but as the
Acts of the Apostles tells us it was the gift of being able to proclaim the mighty acts of God. It was the gift of being able to proclaim the saving work of Jesus to those waiting and longing for the Good News of salvation. The gift was not just an ability to
speak, but these confused and frightened disciples of the Lord suddenly knew what their experience of Jesus meant, and were
anxious to share it with the world. The holy wind of the Spirit blew away their fear, and the fire of faith burned so brightly in
them that they could not help but proclaim Jesus’ mighty and saving deeds. The gift of the coming of the Holy Spirit gave them
a mission and set them on a path of sharing the power and love of Jesus with the world.
We live in a world longing for healing, peace, mercy, justice, goodness and meaning. We pray that the Holy Spirit might
make us joyful and convincing witnesses to the plan of God for our lives, the presence of the new life of Jesus among us, and
living signs of hope in the daily struggles of life. Along with the whole Church we pray: Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of
your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.

Mayor Wilson opened the public
hearing for Ordinance No. 595 Opting Out of the Requirements of Family Health Care Dwellings. No input
by the public was given. Motion to
close the hearing by Councilor
Robeck, second by Councilor
Ziemer. All members present voted
in favor.
Motion and second to approve the
third reading of Ordinance 595 by
Ziemer and Dietz. All members present voted in favor. Ordinance to be in
force upon publication.
Hearing opened by Mayor Wilson.Justin Black, SEH, presented the
Feasibility Report for the Hennepin
Avenue ADA Improvements. The
proposed project includes complete
replacement of sidewalk along the
east side of Hennepin Avenue between 11th Street East and 13th Street
East to meet ADA standards and partial replacement of water main, along
with associated road and utility
restoration. The project area is along
a trunk highway and the MN Department of Transportation has a direct
involvement in the project as both
regulator and provider of partial
funding.
Proposed assessments, cost estimates and proposed schedule were
presented.
Public input concerned access to
businesses and property owners concerns of length of time for project
completion and if street parking
would still be available.
Councilor Perschau motioned to
close the hearing. Councilor Robeck
seconded the motion. All members
present voted in favor.
No further action was taken at this
time until funding sources can be
identified.
Justin Black, SEH, reviewed the
Pryor Avenue Storm Sewer Structure
quote. This project consists of constructing a manhole structure with a
stop log weir to prevent stormwater
backflow from entering the Central
Watershed from the East Watershed
area.
The elevation in this portion of the
East Watershed is now several feet
higher than it was in 1997 and it has
reached a point where water is flowing backwards from the originally intended flow and is now entering the
Central Watershed through the North
Central Ponds. This is creating an additional burden for the Central Storm
System.
Juul Contracting had the low bid
of $17,889.00 to install the structure.
Discussion and questions led to a
motion by Councilor Perschau to approve the low bid of Juul Contracting
for $17,889.00 for the installation of
this structure contingent upon permit
approval of Buffalo Creek Watershed
District. Councilor Dietz seconded.
Members present voting in favor
Dietz, Ziemer and Perschau. Member
Robeck voted no. Motion carried.
Justin Black, SEH presented the
Feasibility Report for the 2017 Baxter Avenue Improvement Project in
which existing conditions and proposed improvements along with estimated costs, proposed assessments
and proposed project financing were
reviewed.
The City and SEH will also be
working with TC & W Railroad regarding railroad crossings within the
project as well as the crossing on
Hennepin Avenue.
Councilor Perschau motioned to
accept report and set the public hearing with the following resolution:
