S
Panthers end five-year skid against Tigers
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
For the first time in five
years, the Glencoe-Silver
Lake football team reigns
supreme over its top rival –
and it took just one touch-
down to do so.
The Panthers won their sec-
ond game in as many tries this
season by defeating the host
Tigers 6-0 on Friday, Aug. 28.
The lone tally of the contest
came on a touchdown pass
from quarterback Luke Frahm
to running back Carsen Stre-
ich just before halftime.
“I told (defensive coordina-
tor Dave Dose) after Thurs-
day’s practice – because we
didn’t have a very good offen-
sive practice – I said, ‘if you
shut them out, we got a
chance to win,’” coach Scott
Tschimperle said. “Our de-
fense was outstanding. I don’t
think Hutch ever got to the red
zone against our team. There
were some scenarios where
we could have had a touch-
down scored on us, but our
defense came up with some
big plays.”
It was the GSL’s first defeat
of their Class 4A neighbors
since 2010. It was also the
first time Hutchinson has been
shutout since 2009. The Pan-
thers improved to 2-0 with a
pair of road triumphs, while
the Tigers have dropped to 0-
2.
“I’m very proud of how our
kids played, it’s a huge win,”
Tscimperle said. “I think our
kids went into the game confi-
dent that they could win, but
going into a game like that on
the road we had to be disci-
plined and poised. I thought
we did that.”
GSL moved the ball well in
the middle of the field in post-
ing 191 yards of offense via a
number of time-consuming
drives. However, advances
sputtered the closer the Pan-
thers got to the opposing goal
line.
“Our offense was good
within the 20’s,” Tschimperle
said. “But once we got into
the red zone, we stalled out on
a few opportunities to score.”
After a couple of tries, GSL
broke through for what turned
out to be the lone score of the
contest, recorded with just 16
seconds remaining in the first
half. On fourth-and-goal from
the 7-yard line, Frahm hit
Streich in the end zone for the
Panthers’ first touchdown
against the Tigers since 2013.
Hutchinson’s best look at
the end zone came on the
drive prior to GSL’s scoring
surge when what appeared to
be a 32-yard touchdown pass
was called back on account of
a penalty.
It was the closest the hosts
came to putting up points for
the entire game. The Panthers
defense was splendid for the
second consecutive contest,
this time holding the Tigers to
144 total yards after allowing
New London-Spicer 161 yards
in a season-opening 20-6 tri-
umph the previous week.
Linebacker Nick Brelje led
the GSL defenders with 11
total tackles, five of which
were solo, as well as one inter-
ception. Safety Teddy Pe-
tersen also picked off a Tigers
pass, his second interception
in as many weeks. Jacob Von-
Berge and Nick Tabbert each
registered a sack.
“Our defense has been the
strength of our team right
now,” Tschimperle said. “All
those returning guys on de-
fense, they’ve really been
making plays when we need

Brelje, Teddy Petersen, Tristan Weber and Peyton Sell

score as the Panthers defeated the Tigers 6-0 on Fri-
day, Aug. 28. It was the first time since 2010 that GSL
had defeated Hutchinson and the first time that the
Tigers had been blanked since the Panthers shut
them out in 2009.

The Plato Blue Jays played a draft
card to their distinct advantage in
their state Class C tournament open-
er, riding the talented arm of Winsted
Wildcats pitcher Tony Kley to a 3-0
shutout of the Lamberton Long Sox
in Watkins on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Kley, the Blue Jays top draft
choice upon winning the Region 7C
Tournament, was dazzling for his
temporary club, striking out 15 Lam-
berton batters while allowing just
four hits and one walk in eight
shutout innings. Chris Odegaard
completed the shutout by striking out
two batters in the ninth to earn the
save.
The Blue Jays logged all the scor-
ing they needed on a two-run homer
by Matt Odegaard in the third inning
that plated both himself and Chris
Odegaard. Plato tacked on one more
run in the sixth when Joe Nix drove
home Tyler Chap.
The seven Plato hits came from six
different batters, with Tyler Lang col-
lecting a pair of hits. Lang and Nolan
Lepel each had a double – with
Lepel’s two-bagger eventually lead-
ing to his team’s third run of the
game.
With the win, the Blue Jays put to
bed the disappointment of 2013,
when the team earned a first-round
bye, only to be upset by New Prague
in its state opener. Plato now ad-
vances to the third round of state
play, with up to four games to come
on this weekend’s tournament dock-
et.
First up, the Blue Jays are sched-
uled to take on New London-Spicer
in Cold Spring at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
A win in that game sends the squad
back to Watkins, where they will take
on either Luverne or Cannon Falls in
a state quarterfinal matchup at 11
a.m. Sunday morning. A win there
propels Plato to a semifinal matchup
at 5 p.m. Sunday, with a victory plac-
ing the squad in the state title game
at 2 p. m. Monday afternoon in
Watkins.
A state championship would be the
Blue Jays’ third in team history, join-
ing previous titles won in 1996 and
2007.

GSL cross-country squads both victorious at NYA meet

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams
each got their respective seasons off to a proper start with wins
in Norwood Young America’s Alumni Meet on Saturday, Aug.
29.
The GSL boys claimed 23 points, topping host NYA’s 26-
point showing. Maple Lake/Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity did not
register a team score after competing with just three runners.
The Panther girls claimed 24 points, bettering NYA’s 35 points
and ML/LP/HT’s 81 points.
Michael Schaefer claimed top honors in the boys’ race, finish-
ing first with a time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds on the 5,000-
meter course at Baylor Park. His finish was nearly a full two
minutes ahead of runner-up Ben Barth of NYA, who logged an
18:47.
Thirteen boys ran in the three-team meet, with the Panthers
placing all five of its runners in the top eight. Tony Fischer was
third in 19:06, with Joseph Knudten and Michael Meyer taking
fifth and sixth, respectively, in 19:20 and 19:28. Tyler Haus-
laden was eighth in 19:40.
Annamaria Falcon took second in the girls’ run, finishing their
equidistant course in 22:48. She was followed closely by Megan
Siewert in third place at 22:50 and Majkya Metcalf in fourth at
23:01. All five of the GSL girls also placed in the top eight, as
Gia Venier took seventh in 24:15 while Savannah Stradtmann
placing eighth in 24:16.
Season Outlook
It’s a new-look squad for GSL boys’ cross-country. The Pan-
thers graduated five members of last season’s third-place team
finisher at the state Class A meet.
Of last year’s state participants, only Schaefer – now a senior
– and junior Austin Schroepfer are back this autumn.
Schaefer and fellow senior Ethan Wolf co-captain this year’s
squad, with Meyer, Fischer and Schroepfer among the team’s
key returnees.
“We are hoping for an all-state performance from Michael,”
coach Jeff Delwiche said. “(We have a) young team which
should be good in the next couple of years – several good
younger runners.”
Josh Metcalf, who said the goal is to “change the culture of
the program,” now leads the GSL girls’ cross-country team.
“We want to stress the importance of working hard and being
willing to ‘hurt’ in races,” he said.
There are wholesale personnel changes for the girls’ team,
with Taylor Venier, Mary Schmitt, Josie Schmitt, Peyton Miska-
Alberts, Micanna Maresh and Becca Green all having departed.
Co-captains Erica Hecksel, Tarin Michaelis and Robin Swift
lead the team that also counts Falcon, Gia Venier and Kayla
DeYounge among the returnees.
Metcalf said the team will work through “regular season”
meets with an eye towards being at its peak for the big meets at
season’s end.
“We want to continue to improve our overall fitness and be
running our best times at conference and section,” he said.

The new-look Glencoe-
Silver Lake girls’ tennis got
its season off to a frenzied
pace with six total matches
spread out over a dual, a
triangular and a quadrangu-

Saturday, Aug. 29.
GSL was the site for a
season-opening four-team
event against Sibley East,
Blue Earth Area and Unit-
ed South Central on Tues-
day, Aug. 25.
The Panthers came close
to claiming a team victory
in one of its three matches,
narrowly falling to Sibley
East by a 4-3 score.
GSL earned wins in all
three doubles matches. The
No. 1 team of Allie Harpel
and Mac Monahan won 6-
2, 6-1; the No. 2 duo of
Mady Posusta and Katie
Doolittle won 6-4, 5-6, 10-

The Glencoe-Silver Lake
girls’ soccer team claimed a 2-
2 season-opening tie against
Spectrum in Elk River on
Monday, Aug. 31, twice rally-
ing from deficits to forge the
draw.
“Great battle,” coach Zach
Otto-Fisher said. “We passed
up a few opportunities to get
ahead, but, early game jitters.”
Down six players due to in-
juries and circumstances, GSL
trailed 1-0 at halftime. How-
ever, Ashlyn Stuewe knotted
the game after the break on a
goal set up on fellow mid-
fielder Jordan Breidenbach’s
assisting cross pass.
Spectrum again took the
lead at 2-1, before midfielder
Emily Thalmann threaded a
pass to Emily Clouse that the
forward one-timed into the net
to knot the count at 2-2.
That’s where the score
stayed through the remaining
moments of regulation and
two-5-minute overtime ses-
sions as the Panthers made the
90-minute bus trip back home
with a record of 0-0-1.
GSL opened its home
schedule on Tuesday against
Worthington, played after the
Chronicle went to press. The
Panthers open the Wright
County Conference schedule
at Mound Westonka on Thurs-
day.

The GSL junior varsity
claimed a season-opening 2-0
victory at Spectrum, with

Lady Panthers pounce on Albert Lea in opener
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team got its
season off on the right foot by means of a dominant
defeat of Albert Lea in Hopkins on Saturday, Aug.
29. The Lady Panthers had little trouble with the
Tigers, sweeping the match in three-straight games:
25-18, 25-17, 25-12.
Middle hitters Maddie Monahan and Maddy
Kalenberg led GSL with five kills apiece, while mid-
dle Erika Ribar and outside hitter Taylor Novak had
four kills each. Novak also led the squad with three
service aces. Setter Layne Herrmann had a team-
high 17 set assists.
“It was a great digging game, ” coach Lori
Schwirtz said.
Five of the Lady Panthers put up double-digit dig
totals, despite the quick match. Libero Emily Muet-
zel led the way with 16 digs, followed by setter Jes-
sica Lemke with 15, Novak with 13, Herrmann with
12 and outside Cortney Konen with 11.
GSL hosted section rival Norwood-Young Ameri-
ca on Tuesday night, after the Chronicle went to
press. The Lady Panthers will play Thursday at
Mound Westonka in their Wright County Conference
opener.
Season Outlook
There’s reason for optimism this autumn as GSL
returns all but two players – including all-conference
honoree Alexis Kerslake – from last year’s squad
that amassed 22 victories.
Schwirtz lists topping that 22-win total, winning
the conference and gaining a high sectional seed as
team goals. She would also like to see the squad go
undefeated through the team’s abbreviated five-
match home schedule this autumn.
While Herrmann and Konen are officially listed as
captains, Schwirtz considers her entire senior five-
some – including Ribar, Muetzel and Kalenberg – as
holding the team’s true captaincy.
“This year’s team has great chemistry and love for
the game,” the coach said. “We are looking forward
to a great 2015 … we hope to have lots of fun.”

setback against the Cardinals having come
in a 17-14 loss on Sept. 10, 2004. The Pan-
thers bested Annandale 46-14 in last year’s

“We’ve got two big road wins and our
kids prepared well for both games,” Tschim-

well this week heading into the game

great racing action in each class.
The B&B Racing Chassis IMCA
Stock Car feature was the main event
of the evening paying $1600 to win.
The race was a nail-biter throughout
with close three-wide racing and
only one caution in the 25 laps.
Andy Altenburg from Truman was
the early leader, taking off from the
front row from his starting position
along with Elijah Zevenbergen from
Ocheybedan, Iowa.
The two were side-by-side until
Dan Mackenthun, the current track
points leader, made his way in be-
tween the two cars. By the fourth lap,
Mackenthun had the lead.
Zevenbergen was running with
Mackenthun for 22 laps until he fell
off the pace. Shaun Bruns of Danube,
who had moved through the field
from his 14th place start, then con-
tended with Mackenthun. It was a
very close finish, but Mackenthun
came out the winner with Bruns tak-
ing second and Brent Uecker from
Hutchinson took third place ahead of
Dean Cornelius of New Prague.
There was also a Tough Guy Chal-
lenge race in honor of Joe Voss with
the top 10 drivers from the feature
inverted from their finishing posi-
tion. On each lap, the car that was in
last place had to pull off the track.
The last car on the track was Matt
Schauer from Arlington, he claimed a
$500 prize for the win.
The Unhinged Pizza IMCA Sport
Modified feature was also a great
event.
Jason Schroeder of Norwood
Young America took the lead from
his front row spot and led the first
nine laps until two yellow flags came
out, the second of which allowed
John Albrecht to get by him.
Albrecht held off Swea City,
Iowa’s Matt Looft for the final five
laps to earn the win. Looft took sec-
ond, while Tim Bergerson from
Mankato – who started eighth –
placed third.
Tori Knutson of Monticello was
the early leader in the 95.7 IMCA
Sprint feature, until a yellow flag ap-
peared due to Jordan Wilmes driving
off the track in turn four.
After the restart, Brandon Allen of
St. Peter got around Knutson and re-
mained the leader to win the race
ahead of Trevor Serbus of Olivia,
who began the race in the eighth po-
sition. Michael Stien and Jesse Cripe
found themselves relegated to the pit
for most of the race after a pair of
collisions.
There were 20 cars in the Liberty
Station Outlaw feature, but Brian
Loscheider from Cologne led wire-
to-wire to take first place ahead of
Perry Oestreich of Belle Plaine.
There was one caution in the race
after Tyler Archer’s spin out. Karl
Hewitt, Jr. started sixth, but worked
his way up to battle with both
Oestreich and Loscheider before set-
tling for third.
Luke Trebelhorn of Buffalo Lake
won his first Coors Light IMCA
Sport Compact feature.
With two laps to go, a yellow came
out for Jed Trebelhorn of Winthrop
after he hooked up with Alan Lahr of
Nicollet – ending Lahr’s night.
When the race resumed, Trebel-
horn held off both Zach Foesch of
Olivia and Nate Coopman of Manka-
to for the win.
The Eckblad Trucking IMCA
Hobby feature event was caution-free
and featured two different race lead-
ers.
Cory Schultz of Arlington was the
early leader, but by lap nine, Cory
Probst of Worthington seized the ad-
vantage. Schultz was unable wrest
the lead back and had to settle for
second place ahead of Brad Becker
of Arlington.
Once again the MN 93 IMCA
Modified feature was a fast and ex-
citing race.
Travis Schurmann of Howard Lake
led the first lap, but then Chad Porter
from Madison Lake passed a couple
of cars to take the lead.
A red flag was thrown on lap three
when Jeff Coon of Elysian drove off
the top of turn one after tangling with
Nate Zimmerman of Janesville.
Coon’s car rolled over. While he was
fine, his car was out of the race.
The race eventually proceeded
under a green flag, and it remained
that way for the final 17 laps.
Dalton Magers of Redwood Falls
led for three laps after the restart, but
Porter took the lead back on the sev-
enth lap.
With only three laps left, Clint
Hatlestad of Glencoe who started in
eighth, got around Porter to take the
lead en route to the win. Porter took
second, while Curt Lund held off
Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie
place third.

Fighting a losing battle?
F
ollowing the news can be disturbing. I suppose it always has been, but the death of innocent people is
most horrifying. Last week, we actually could witness the murder of two innocent people in Roanoke,
Virginia on live television. Later on in the week, a Sheriff’s Deputy near Houston, Texas, was gunned
down in cold blood while pumping fuel into his patrol car. Closer to home, it seems like every week brings
more stories of shootings or stabbings resulting in loss of life in the Twin Cities. Back on the national level, up-
setting videos, one after another, have been recently released exposing Planned Parenthood and the great evil
and pain that happens inside the walls of its’ facilities. Not only are unborn babies ripped apart in abortions, but
parts of those babies, callously referred to as “specimens,” are sold at a price.
Jesus warned us about these kinds of terrible things. He reminded us that the devil would be hard at work,
seeking to devour hearts and minds. He told us the world would try to silence His Word of life, and that His
truth would be shunned. Satan will stop at nothing to rage at Christ, even if it means murdering the tiniest of
people and selling their bodies for profit.
But God is not silent. He has a word for us, too. He comforts us in the knowledge that the devil’s attempts are
desperate and futile, for Jesus came to save people, regardless of their age, race, gender, or size. He reminds us
that He has “overcome the world” (John 16:33) and “came that [we] may have life and have it abundantly”
(John 10:10). His point? Satan is fighting a losing battle, and he knows it.
Satan will roar for a time, but his evil, murderous ways won’t last. He’s fighting a losing battle. Take comfort
from God’s Word. Pray boldly. Speak bravely. Defend life. Act courageously. Let your frustration and disgust be
turned to prayer and action on behalf of the innocent, especially our littlest neighbors, for Satan cannot win, and
God is not silent.

urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.

The Bohemian Reading
and Education Society
(Cesky Ctenarsky Zdelavajici
Spolek) was formed on Jan.
9, 1876, by a small group of
Bohemian settlers. It was lo-
cated midway between Silver
Lake and Hutchinson on
Highway 7. They wanted
young people to keep the
Czech heritage alive by pro-
viding social and educational
advantages for themselves
and their children. They
spoke Czech and taught
Czech to the children, created
a Czech library and per-
formed many Czech plays.
Meeting with their own
groups helped to share ideas,
experiences, problems, hard-
ships, sympathies and create
strong Czech communities,
making the transition into
America easier.
The charter members were
Josef Kadlec, Paul Chernau-
sek, Josef Janecky, Valav
Pessek, Josef Zila, John
Kasper, Anton Zeleny, Josef
Friauf, Frank Kasper and Va-
clav Zavoral. Monthly meet-
ings were held with dues at
10 cents. The society bylaws
stated $20 yearly should be
used to purchase Czech
books, teach the Czech lan-
guage and organize a Czech
choir and dramatic club.
The Bohemian School was
started in the summer of 1876
at the wooden District 11
School House; later to be
called the Komensky School
House. Frank Chernausek
was the first teacher, fol-
lowed by Anna Pessek. Other
teachers were Bozena Dostal
Smutka, Maud Doubrava
Dlouhy, Vlasta Dostal, Ruth
Halva Hoodecheck and
Gladys Svoboda Miska. At
the end of the school year,
children preformed a Czech
program followed by a picnic
and an evening dance. Sales
of refreshments and dance
tickets paid for the teacher’s
salary and other expenses.
The drama club’s first play
entitled “Trestanci na Spilbe-
ka” was presented in 1877
staring Misses Anna Kasper,
Anna Pessek, Anna Huderle;
and Josef Tmey, Anton Zele-
ny, Charles Brokl and Wencel
Mikulecky.
By 1882, the society had
grown to 50 members; it was
decided to build a hall of
their own. They bought an
acre of land at the corner of
State Highway 7 and County
Road 4 for $60. The dimen-
sions were 30 by 52 feet by
16 feet high and was first
used on Nov. 10, 1883. In
1895, a second story was
added with a stage and a
dance floor. The first floor
contained a large lodge room,
a kitchen, a dining room and
a bar. It stood for many years
as a local landmark and was
known to everyone in the
area.
Much Czech history found
its inspiration at the Bohemi-
an Hall. Meetings of the
Lodge 34, Z.C.B.J. (Zapadni
Cesko Bratrska Jednota) are
still held here in 2015 at the
nearby Komensky School
House. Z.C.B.J. was general-
ly an insurance organization
to help a widowed wife and
her children. Cemetery meet-
ings, Czech programs, public
dances, wedding and anniver-
sary dances were held at the
Bohemian Hall. Jerry’s Bo-
hemian Band played for an
Easter dance; O’Henry’s
Concertina’s Dance Band
played for a Thanksgiving
dance, etc.
Rumors abound about the
whole building swaying from
side to side when the dancers
started swinging and hopping
to the polka music on the sec-
ond floor.
Each Memorial Day, large
groups would walk two miles
from the Bohemian Hall to
the Bohemian National
Cemetery (Cesky Narodni
Hrbitov) to honor their ances-
tors.
In 1936, the Reading Soci-
ety celebrated its 60th an-
niversary with a dance on
Jan. 11, but the coldest
weather in history (31 days in
a row with below-zero tem-
peratures) kept the attendance
small.
In 1941, the social atmos-
phere of the community
changed — young people
seemed to lose interest in
their Czech heritage and en-
rollment in the Czech lan-
guage school dropped to
three. The picnics and
evening dances which were
to finance the schools ex-
penses fell short of the goal.
The society was $300 in debt.
Arrangements were made to
turn the Bohemian Hall over
to the Z.C.B.J. Lumir Lodge
34 with stipulations to keep
the library and Czech books
in good condition and to
mount pictures of the found-
ing fathers and others on the
walls.
In about 1957, the brick
Komensky School, about one
mile away, was closed.
Arrangements were made for
Lumir 34 to buy it. The li-
brary was moved and the
founding fathers’ pictures
were hung in the new loca-
tion, where they remain to
this day in 2015.
After 63 years of bustling
activity, the Bohemian Hall
was torn down in 1960. A
historic landmark which cre-
ated many happy moments in
the lives of many Czechs was
gone forever! Hopes and
dreams by the founding fa-
thers trying to keep the Czech
heritage alive were shattered!
Future generations were
being Americanized.
Another Czech group
called the Free Thinkers with
no religious connection was
also in this area. After 400
years of religion being forced
upon them by the domineer-
ing Austrian government,
once they stepped on Ameri-
can soil they were “truly
free.” Their viewpoint held
that opinions of religion
should be formed on the basis
of science, logic, and reason
and not influenced by any
other authority.
