GSL volleyball
third at Heritage
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
The Glencoe-Silver Lake
volleyball team carried an 8-4
record into this week after
claiming its first Wright
County Conference West victory of the season as well as
finishing third in its initial
tournament of the year last
week.
The most recent stretch
opened with a four-game loss
to visiting Mayer Lutheran on
Tuesday, Sept. 13. The visitors won the first game 25-17,
before the Panthers bounced
back for a 25-22 win in game
two.
However, the Crusaders finished off the contest by
sweeping the final two games
25-20 and 25-18 to send GSL
to a second-consecutive home
defeat. Despite the losses at
home, team members remain
quite awestruck at the boisterous support the squad receives at home.
“The fan support at our
home and away games is unreal,” Lexi Hansch said. “It's
fun playing with a huge fan
section because they give you
this extra excitement which
makes us want to win even
more.”
Maddie Monahan led the
Panthers with 17 kills, while
Jessica Lemke and Hansch
paced the squad with 19 and
17 assists, respectively.
Lemke’s 17 digs led GSL,
with Rachael Popp registering
16 digs.
Back on the road two nights
later, the Panthers returned to
their winning ways with a
four-game victory at Litchfield.
GSL took the first two
games by respective scores of
25-20 and 25-13 before the
Dragons rallied to take game
three 25-21. Undaunted, the
Panthers held off their hosts
to take the fourth and deciding game by a 27-25 and spirit away the victory.

It just wasn’t the Panthers
night.
The Glencoe-Silver Lake
football team suffered its second consecutive loss in a 2720 loss at Annandale on Friday, Sept. 16, falling to the
Cardinals for the first time
since 2004.
“We made a lot of mental
mistakes that are uncharacteristic,” coach Scott Tschimperle said. “We’ve got to be
better – mentally tougher.”
The Panthers turned the
ball over six times and had
one game-altering slip on a
shaggy sod made slick by a
brief bout of rain early in the
first quarter.
However, Tschimperle was
not about to blame Mother
Nature for GSL’s woes.
“Weather had nothing to do
with (the turnovers),” he said.
“We can’t make the weather
an excuse.”
The evening actually got
off to a good start for the
Panthers, who forced an Annandale punt to begin the
game before putting the first
score on the board on their
opening offensive possession.
After a 59-yard play that
saw running back Michael
Forar pick up a teammate’s
fumble and run deep into
Cardinal territory, as well as
a fourth-and-4 run for a first
down by running back
Carsen Streich, quarterback
Luke Frahm surged into the
endzone on a one-yard run to
give GSL a 7-0 lead on kicker/lineman Joey Cullen’s
extra point.
Annandale went three-andout on its next drive, but
opened the second quarter by
recovering a GSL fumble that
it turned into a touchdown
three plays later to knot the
score at 7-7.
However, the Panthers regained the lead on the ensuing drive as Streich ran in a
touchdown from 20 yards out
after fullback Spencer Lepel
set up the play with a 33-yard
run of his own.
Despite GSL’s first extrapoint miss of the year, it took
a 13-7 advantage into the
halftime huddle behind Annandale’s north endzone.
The Panthers missed out on
a chance to extend their edge
on the opening drive of the
second half after a fumble at
the Cardinals’ 13-yard line
gave the hosts the ball.
It didn’t appear that Annandale would do much with
the opportunity as a gaffe and
a penalty backed the Cardinals up to their own 2-yard
line.
Yet a long pass and a fallen
GSL defender changed all
that as Annandale knotted the
score at 13-13 on a 98-yard
touchdown toss that changed
the course of the contest.
“It was a big pass, we were

Sacha Willhite returns a serve to her Litchfield
opponent as the Glencoe-Silver Lake tennis
team hosted the Dragons – ranked ninth in
Class A – on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
It’s been a difficult year for the
Glencoe-Silver Lake tennis team. The
squad remains without a victory on the
season as a number of fresh faces have
been thrust into the varsity lineup out
of sheer necessity.
With the most recent loss of Tess
Chap, out due to a back injury, the
Panthers are currently fielding a varsity squad that is almost entirely different than the one that took to the court
for the season opener less than one
month ago.
“We will have seven girls who never
thought they were going to play varsity tennis, this season in the lineup,”
coach Robb DeCorsey said. “Three of
which are first year players.”
Chap, who had ascended to No.
2/No. 1 doubles, is the latest to be
claimed by the injury bug. Preceding
her were No. 2 doubles player Maddie
Dressel – out with a broken ankle, No.
3/No. 2 single Katie Doolittle – down
with a sprained ankle, and No. 1 single
Mady Posusta – who is recovering
from a concussion suffered away from
the court.
DeCorsey’s lineups were already depleted prior to the spate of injuries
after three key members of last year’s
squad did not return this season and
another that had secured a top spot on
this year’s team left the squad after the
season began.
Last week saw the Panthers lose 7-0
to visiting Litchfield, the ninth-ranked
team in Class A, on Tuesday, Sept. 13,
before coming up largely empty in a
tournament at Hutchinson on Friday,
Sept. 16.
Allie Harpel claimed her team’s lone
match win at Hutch, defeating Southwest Christian’s Jessie Williams 7-5,
0-6, 10-8 in the No. 2 doubles bracket.
GSL hosted Annandale on Tuesday,
Sept. 20, after the Chronicle went to
press, and is slated to host Delano on
Thursday.

in man coverage on that side
of the field. Our guy slipped
and fell, and that was that,”
Tschimperle said.
A penalty on the Annandale sideline for excessive
celebration all-but killed the
Cardinals opportunity at converting an extra-point effort,
but that ended up mattering
little in the grand scheme of
the game.
After forcing the Panthers
to turn the ball over on
downs at midfield, Annandale took its first lead of the
game – a lasting advantage –
on a four-play drive in the
waning minutes of the third
quarter. After failing to convert on a two-point attempt,
the Cardinals carried a 19-13
lead into the final stanza of
the contest.
GSL appeared to catch a
break after going back on defense early in the fourth
quarter as defensive back
Jake Vasek recovered a Cardinal fumble at the Panther
30-yard line.
Yet, just two plays later,
the Panthers fumbled the ball
back to the hosts.
Annandale went on to
notch the game-deciding
points on a 12-yard touchdown run and a successful
two-point conversion to take
a 27-13 lead with six minutes to play.
GSL kept matters interest-
ing, drawing within a single
score on a scintillating 26yard touchdown pass on
fourth-and-16 from Frahm to
Streich – a pass that the rusher dove to haul in though behind a trio of Cardinal defenders – to make the score
27-20 on Cullen’s extrapoint kick.
That score became final
just under three minutes later
as Annandale did not allow a
final GSL scoring drive before the clock read all zeroes.
“Annandale got 21 points
off turnovers,” Tschimperle
said. “That was huge. That
was the game.”
Forar led the Panthers with
101 rushing yards, while
Streich’s 26-yard touchdown
catch was enough to make
him GSL’s leading receiver.
Frahm completed three passes in all for 61 total yards.
On defense, Vasek led the
way with six total tackles
and the fumble recovery.
Lineman Peyton Sell had a
team-high two sacks. Linebacker Ben Donnay logged
five total tackles, four of
which were solo, with one
sack.
Ethan Wraspir, getting his
first start at safety for the injured Tyler Ehrke, had three
solo tackles and a goal line
interception just before halftime.
Tschimperle said that there
will be multiple changes to
the lineup before GSL’s
game at Holy Family
Catholic this Friday, which
will include added workload
for Sell.
“Peyton is going to go
two-way, we’re going to
move Axel Schulz to center
and have Peyton play
guard,” he said.
Other alterations will include Cameron Chap seeing
time at defensive end, Nick
Schmidt at linebacker and a
flip-flop of Taylor Schauer to
safety and Wraspir to cornerback until Ehrke returns
from injury.
“We have to figure out a
way to get better,” Tschimperle said. “Everything we
did wrong at Annandale is
fixable.”
Friday’s game at Holy
Family in Victoria will be
GSL’s second-consecutive
road game.
The Fire, also 1-2 on the
season, is dealing with a
multitude of graduations
from last year’s squad.
The Panthers topped Holy
Family 42-21 in 2015, but
Tschimperle cautions against
overconfidence.
“Holy Family is always
dangerous,” he said. “They
run exotic sets and have a
defense similar to Annandale. They always play us
tough.”

team lead with 16 kills apiece,
while Lemke’s 27 assists were
tops on the squad. Monahan
also had a team high 27 digs.
“Kasidy shined with a .400
average hitting,” coach Lori
Schwirtz said. “Stellar with 16
kills.”
Buoyed by the triumph,
GSL made its annual trip to
Maple Grove for the Heritage
Christian Academy Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 17.
“Our tournament went very
well,” Cacka said. “Overall, it
was a really good weekend.”
The Panthers rolled through
preliminary play, beating Holy
Family Catholic on aggregate
points 25-19, 25-22, and then
sweeping Legacy Christian
Academy (25-17, 25-12),
Byron (25-17, 25-12) and
Providence Academy (25-22,
25-12).
That successful run set up a
semifinal matchup against the
host Eagles – a third place finisher in the state Class A tournament last season – in the
semifinals.
While Heritage topped the
Panthers in a sweep (22-25,
17-25), GSL did recover to
defeat Byron in three games
(25-19, 19-25, 15-7) in the
final tourney matchup and secure a third-place finish.
“This weekend we bonded
as a team and had a lot of fun.
It was nice that we were able
to get everyone in and play
with different combinations,”
Hansch said. “We wish we
would have gotten to the
championship, but we lost to
Heritage Christian, which is a
very good team, and ended up
getting third.”
The Panthers return home
for a conference matchup
against Rockford on Thursday
night, and then head to Sibley
East for their second tournament of the season on Saturday before returning to GSL
to take on Belle Plaine on
Tuesday.
A trip to Dassel-Cokato
next Thursday will close out
the month of September as the
team then turns its attention to
the crucial month of October.
“I feel that this season is
going well and we are improving in every practice and
match,” Hansch said. “We
have had some amazing wins,
and some tough losses but we
have used them as learning
opportunities to get better and
want more.”

teenager riding his bike saw the man kick the tire in frustration and asked, “What’s wrong?”

The man explained his situation and lamented, “Even if I could call my wife, she cannot bring me the extra set of keys because this is our only car.”
The teenager handed his cell phone to the man and said, “Call your wife and tell her that I’m coming to get the extra set of
keys.”
“That’s a seven mile round trip,” said the man.
“Don’t worry about it,” responded the teenager.
About an hour later, the teenager returned with the extra set of keys. The man offered him some money, but he refused. “Let’s
just say I needed the exercise,” said the teenager. Then her rode off on his bike like a cowboy in the movies.
That story illustrates what God means when he talks about wisdom. One might think of wisdom as a series of profound sayings coming from a mysterious mystic on top of a mountain. The Lord is much more real. The Lord is much more real. The
Lord describes wisdom in terms of how I live my life, by the deeds I do to touch the lives of others.
The Lord’s view of wisdom involves deeds done in ...humility. And that’s where Christ comes in. When I stand at the foot of
the cross, when I understand that it was my sin for which Jesus died, when I realize that my life is full and fresh and forgiven
because of what my Savior has done on my behalf–that’s when the real wisdom begins. That’s when I begin to see my life as a
beautiful chance to thank the Lord for what he has done. That’s when I begin to see my life as a precious string of opportunities
to thank my Savior by touching the lives of others.
Maybe someone in your life needs a helping hand. Take a moment to fill that need. That’s what wisdom is.
James 3:13 “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life,
by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”
Proverbs 9:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

Court Sept. 1, Judge Timothy J.

Sibley County to conduct land rent survey
Sibley County is conducting its annual farm land rent
survey.
This survey is available to
take online at https://www.
surveymonkey.com/r/RM5FV
G2. Renters and landlords are
encouraged to fill out this survey to better help the Extension office answer land rent
questions. No personal infor-
mation is requested. The information requested is the
number of acres rented, the
township farm land is located
in, 2016 rental rates, estimated 2017 rental rates, and how
well the land is tiled. Deadline to fill out the survey is
Friday, Oct. 28.
One can also request a
paper copy of the survey to
fill out by calling the Sibley
County Extension office at
507-237-4100.
Farm land rent is of critical
concern to landowners and
operators. The added costs of
inputs, variable markets and
agricultural land prices greatly affect farm land rent.
Results of the survey will
be available on Nov. 1. These
results will be posted online
on the county website (http://
