ports Boys take first at home meet
Wednesday, September 25, 2013 The McLeod County Chronicle By Josh Randt Sports Editor Posting a third- and first-place finish last week, the boys’ cross country team proved it can compete, even when down a runner, or two. Brandon Richter took second place at the Caty Delwiche Invitational hosted in Glencoe on Thursday with a time of 17:45. Earlier in the week, Richter was unable to finish the Run of the Lakes meet held in Waconia due to headaches. Teammate Cody Becker dropped out of the meet last second as well because of a family emergency. Without two very seasoned runners, Glencoe-Silver Lake finished third out of 10 teams with a score of 89 points. The Panthers took first at their home meet, the Caty Invitational, with a score of 26 points, showing what they can do with a full lineup. “If we ran there (Waconia) like we ran at our home meet we would have been a couple places higher,” head coach Jeff Delwiche said. “That wasn’t our best day, and that was not what we were expecting. But, hopefully we’re not going to be burned out, and we’ll be fresher than a lot of these other teams we’ll see this season.” Richter said part of his problem at Waconia was the way he was running. “I needed to relax my body more,” Richter said. “I did that then it’s sections.” One highlight from the meet at Waconia was Garrett Ardolf’s first place JV finish with a time of 18:47. Delwiche said he’s pleased with how his team is running, but a big part of whether or not GSL can compete against other tough teams has a lot to do with those JV runners. “Right now we’re resting Casey Schulz and Austin Schroepfer from varsity,” he said. “I’m really hoping they’ll continue to add to our top nine. If those two keep the others honest, and their times in the JV races are adequately pushing our No.7 and No.6, that’ll make everyone run faster.” The Panthers traveled to DasselCokato on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Litchfield hosts the next competition on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. GSL then travels to Duluth for the Swain Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5. Wildcats can’t top the Panthers
By Josh Randt Sports Editor The Glencoe-Silver Lake Panther football team has seen both ends of the spectrum when it comes to competition, and now looks to settle right into the rest of its schedule. The Panthers defeated the New London-Spicer Wildcats 42-25 Friday night at Stevens Seminary Stadium. GSL has stuck with the trend of being a second-half team, scoring 27 of its 42 points in the third and fourth quarters. The game was closer than the final score let on, as GSL had a one score lead, 15-7, at halftime. But it only took about six minutes into the second half before the Panthers were up 28-7. Keaton Anderson completed a 21yard strike to Tanner Grack on GSL’s eighth play that resulted in a touchdown. NLS committed a motion penalty on the ensuing drive, and was intercepted by Zach Pierson during the next play. Dalton Clouse scored from 13 yards out on the sixth play of GSL’s next possession, giving the Panthers a 28-7 advantage. The Wildcats started to close the gap, scoring on their next to possessions to make it 28-19. But NLS could not recover the attempted onside kicks, which gave the Panther offense great field position and allowed them to keep scoring. Jake Stuedemann put the nail in the coffin when he scored from 15 yards out with one minute and 43 seconds remaining. Sophomore Teddy Petersen intercepted Ryan Vraa’s first pass on the next drive, and two kneeldowns from Anderson later and the game was over. Petersen finished with seven total tackles and the game-ending interception, but gave the credit to the entire GSL defense. “I felt good, but I have to give it to our defensive line and our linebackers too,” the sophomore said. “They were making plays and helping me out and not just having me make tackles by myself.” GSL managed to rush for 300 yards against a large defensive line for NLS, which had linemen at, or close to, 300 pounds. “It was a battle from the first play to the last,” senior offensive linemen Nolan Lepel said. “There were guys flying everywhere, but we knew what we needed to do.” Lepel said offensively, the team wanted to get after NLS early. “Before the game we said, ‘let’s start the game off from the first play, let’s not wait,’” Lepel said. “We fired off right away and got after it.” The 3-1 Panthers now travel to Litchfield this week for a matchup with the 1-3 Dragons, who beat Redwood Valley last week, 21-15. *** NLS received the opening kick off and started out from their own 49 yard line.

Klockmann has big day at Sibley East tournament
By Josh Randt Sports Editor Despite losing to conference opponents Orono and Waconia last week, the Lady Panthers gained some confidence after placing third at the Sibley East Invitational tournament this past Saturday. Glencoe-Silver Lake split sets with Sibley East in the first match of the day, winning 25-20 in the first, and dropping the second 25-21. But the Lady Panthers surprised a 12-0 team from Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial in the next game, winning 25-23 in the first set, and 25-18 in the second. They were in second place in pool play after splitting with Springfield. Set one went to the Tigers 25-17, with the Lady Panthers demolishing them in the second set, 25-9. But GSL ran into a familiar foe in the first round of tournament playoffs when they faced off against Norwood Young America. The Raiders edged the Panthers in both sets, 25-21, 25-19, which earned the team a third-place finish

Standout has been Christensen at goalie
By Josh Randt Sports Editor Sometimes it’s hard to find a silver lining, especially when you’re team is 0-12. But the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team has bonded through their trials and tribulations, and became a family, according to captain Yodee Rivera. “We’re growing as a team, and as a family,” Rivera said after a 6-0 loss to Delano Monday night. “We’re really proud to be sisters. That’s what we call ourselves. We’re not teammates, we’re sisters.” The captain seems to have a lot of confidence in this group, which is impressive since losing can potentially bring out the worst in a team. “What we take away from this right now, is that we’re going to grow and build our team,” Rivera said. “Being a senior, I’m really proud of these girls.” Looking at the scores so far this season, you might wonder if GSL is even playing a goalie. Well, they are, and she’s doing a pretty good job, considering the amount of shots she’s seen this year. Eighth grader Zoe Christensen has been the goal keeper for their age level, but it is just incomparable when you have our youngest starter, Emily Thalmann (seventh grade), going up against seniors and 1718 year olds.” Rivera said they calculated the team’s average age, and the result may surprise you. “Turns out we’re 13.1 years old, that’s our average,” Rivera said. “There are only two seniors on our team, so I’d say we’re doing pretty well for playing a lot of seventh and eighth graders.” With youth comes mistakes. You’ll even see errors made by veteran teams, but it’s the timing and type of errors you allow that can mean the difference between winning and losing. “It’s not the big mistakes that are killing us,” Otto-Fisher said. “It’s the little things. The things we work on in practice regularly that we need to do.” The Panthers dropped games to Delano, Chain of Lakes Soccer Club and Mound-Westonka this past week. GSL now hosts Waconia on Saturday, and Worthington on Tuesday, Oct. 1. After that, the girls have one game against Holy Family remaining before sections.

Goalie Zoe Christensen goes for a sliding save against Delano’s Katelyn Elsted. The ball barely slipped by Christensen’s right side and dribbled into the net, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead the entire season for GSL, and has 285 saves to 341 shots on goal. Boys are competitive despite an 0-10 record
By Josh Randt Sports Editor While the win column for the boys’ soccer team remains a zero, they are playing teams competitively and making small improvements with every game. Sitting at 0-10, you might think there aren’t any positives that can be taken away in a loss. But not so, according to junior captain Keith Collins. “I think we’re playing a lot more competitively as every game goes by,” Collins said after a 3-0 loss to the Delano Tigers. “We just keep listening to our coach and his new ideas.” Indeed, Glencoe-Silver Lake is playing more competitively. The Panthers faced Delano earlier in the month and came away on the wrong side of a 5-1 loss. During the rematch Monday night, both teams went into halftime tied at 0-0. Collins had an opportunity to take a 1-0 lead with 16 minutes remaining in the first half. Aaron Geisen dribbled the ball aggressively past midfield into Tiger territory, but was met by a fast approaching goal tender who poked the ball away from Geisen.

out of eight teams. Senior captain Stephanie Klockmann had 36 digs, 25 kills and seven solo blocks. Fellow captain Lexi Kerslake had 45 digs and 25 kills. Setter Layne Hermann totaled 70 set assists at the tournament, and had a perfect serving game in the matchup against LCWM. Leading the team with 60 digs, Taylor Novak also contributed 18 kills. The Lady Panthers now travel to Delano on Thursday, before hosting Hutchinson on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Still, the girls played hard, and impressed their coach. “My team won in my heart Thursday night,” Schwirtz said. “They did everything I had asked them to do, worked unbelievably hard, and every point was earned.”

Waconia 3, GSL 0
The Lady Panthers ran into a tough Wildcat team from Waconia Tuesday night, as they fell in three sets. Down 15-8 in the first set, GSL scored six unanswered points to tie the game, with Novak scoring the tying tally. Waconia took another brief lead before the Panthers tied the game at 17-17. But the Wildcats were too big up front for GSL to handle, as Waconia went on its own eight-point run, winning 25-17. The Panthers tried to keep up in the second set, trading points with the Wildcats. But every time GSL tried to close the gap, Waconia scored, keeping them from getting into any kind of rhythm. Down 12-9, the Wildcats started to pull away, going up 17-10 before Schwirtz called a timeout to rally her team. GSL started to trade scores once again, but a massive spike from Jessica Wolf put Waconia up 23-10, and the set ended shortly after, 25-17. Looking defeated, the Lady Panthers got pushed around by the size and talent on the other side of the net in the third set. Three different 5-0 Waconia scoring runs took place, with the final one leaving the score at 19-5. Ten plays later and the victory was Waconia’s, closing out set three 25-9. The Panthers just could not catch a break against a very good team. Plays that looked to be errors in the waiting turned into points for Waconia, as Wolf and middle hitter Kirsten Wagener harrassed the Panthers at the net.

Orono 3, GSL 2
GSL entered into its longest match of the season thus far, going into five sets against the Orono Spartans, losing a heartbreaker 15-6 in the final set. The Spartans “came out of the gates quick” with a fast offense, Schwirtz said, winning 25-17 in the first set. Answering back in the second, the Lady Panthers made some adjustments, serving hard to force setting mistakes. The fine-tuning paid off as they stole the second set 2519, and tallied 33 digs. Hermann led the way with eight digs in set two. Set three played out like the first, as the Lady Panthers were unable to really establish an offense with just seven kills. GSL lost set three 25-15 despite 29 digs and a 100 percent service receive percentage. The kills returned in the fourth set for GSL, scoring 12 points by attacking the net. Kerslake and Novak each had four, and three Panthers each had four of the team’s 20 digs. With a 25-19 victory in set four, the Lady Panthers forced a fifth and final set. GSL had opportunities to steal the game from the Spartans, but some Panther errors and questionable calls left the team with a 15-6 loss.

Cross country girls earn 2 top-5 finishes
By Josh Randt Sports Editor Facing competition in the Wright County Conference this past week, the GlencoeSilver Lake girls’ cross country team earned two top-five finishes. Starting in Waconia on Tuesday, Sept. 17, the Panthers came in fifth with 132 points out of 10 teams. GSL then hosted the Caty Invitational on Thursday, and the girls finished third out of six teams with 71 points. Tori Burr continued her trend of top-10 finishes, placing third at Waconia (15:59), and first at the home meet with a time of 15:49. The senior standout said she was pleased with her first place finish at home, but said the course conditions made what should have been an easy race a little more difficult. “It was awful!” Burr said of the course conditions. “It was really soft and hard to push off, and super muddy. The Wildcats shot themselves in the foot after gaining 20 yards on their first three plays. They were flagged for holding, then for a false start, before throwing a backward pass that nearly ended up in GSL’s possession. The Wildcats punted down to the GSL 19 yard line after a one-yard rush by Adam Essler. The Panthers picked up where they left off the previous week, as Dalton Clouse rushed for five yards on the first two carries for GSL. Anderson completed a pass to Grack for 20 yards down to the GSL 43 yard line. Another three by Anderson and six from Stuedemann put the Panthers across midfield at the NLS 47. Clouse trucked for four yards and then Anderson busted one for 15 more. GSL gained another eight yards over the next two gives up the middle to Clouse once again, who’s tough running set up his teammates. Anderson pulled the ball from the fullback’s gut and carried for another 17 down to the NLS 8 yard line. Stuedemann went around the outside for five more before Anderson was stuffed for no gain on second down. Stuedemann bolted up the middle on the next play for a five-yard touchdown. The extra point was good, giving GSL a 7-0 lead after driving 71 yards in a little under five minutes on 13 plays. It only took about three minutes and seven plays for the Wildcats to even the score at 77 when Essler scored from 26 yards out on the seventh play. But the Panthers went on a 17-play drive that ate up nearly seven minutes of the second quarter clock. Clouse proved to be the workhorse again, carrying seven times, and scoring from the one yard line. The extra point was no good, but NLS was offside, so GSL went for two instead, and got it on a pass to Jacob Popelka. The score remained 15-7 until the second half, which GSL started on offense. Starting at the 50 yard line, GSL stuffed the ball down the Wildcat’s throat until reaching the NLS 21. That’s when Anderson found Grack behind the Wildcat defense for a 21-yard toss and score. The missed extra point left it at 21-7 in favor of GSL. Pierson hopped in front of Zylstra and picked off Vraa’s pass on the second play of the Wildcat’s next possession, giving GSL the ball at the NLS 34

last Thursday. Urban and Davis were the only ones to notch a win in the regular season finale against the Wildcats.
Panther tennis team preparing for sections
By Josh Randt Sports Editor The regular season for the Glencoe-Silver Lake tennis team came to an end last week, when they lost 6-1 to the New London-Spicer Wildcats. With the loss to NLS, the Panthers now have the conference tournament scheduled for Thursday in either Orono or Mound-Westonka to decide all conference and honorable mention honors. After that, team sections start on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at St. John’s University. So what did GSL learn from the loss to the Wildcats with the postseason fast approaching? “We need to be one ball better,” head coach Robb DeCorsey said. “There’s things that we know we need to work on. The girls need to ask to hit 100 extra balls or 200 extra balls. They know I’ll do whatever it takes, but they just have to really want to get after it.” Get after it, like Piper Davis and Jenessa Urban did in the No.2 doubles spot against NLS. The two earned the only victory on Friday, and have not played together in doubles all season long. What was the key to their success? “Communication,” Urban said. “Yeah, we communicated really well,” Davis echoed. Communication, and a group that was excited to play together, resulted in a 6-4, 6-0 two set victory. “We just both came in really pumped,” Urban said. “We were ready.” “We were also able to return their lobs really well,” Davis added. The win didn’t surprise DeCorsey, who said “right now, it’s kind of like whoever wants to play with Jenessa seems to be winning.” Going through a 6-14 season, it would be easy to give up, but Urban and the rest of this Panther team haven’t. Which makes the head coach happy. “I’m so proud of her,” DeCorsey said. “She has worked and worked and worked. She got an opportunity and she has made the most of that opportunity given to her.” With a limited amount of opportunities remaining on the season, the Panthers are now focused on the section tournament. “The whole year it’s been, ‘everyday, get better,’” DeCorsey said. “This week, it’s ‘one ball better.’ That’s where we have to be,” he reiterated.

It only took six plays before Clouse scored his second touchdown of the game from 13 yards out. The extra point made it 28-7 with 5:57 left in the third quarter. Essler rushed the ball six times for 30 yards on the next drive for the Wildcats, doing a bulk of the workload. But it was Beuning who scored from the GSL one yard line with 36 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Keenan Mehlos blocked the extra point, leaving the score at 28-13 with GSL leading. The Panthers went three and out on the next drive, punting to the NLS 45 yard line with 11 minutes remaining in the game. Four minutes later and Zylstra had his first touchdown pass of the evening. Vraa found the 6’4 junior wide open from the GSL 16 yard line. The score was 28-19 after another failed extra point attempt for NLS. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Panthers at their own 49 yard line. Clouse wasted no time, gashing the Wildcats for 25 yards on the first play. He rushed once more for two yards before Stuedemann took the next three carries, and scored on the third from the NLS one yard line. Bondhus’ extra point was good, giving GSL a 35-19 advantage with a little over five minutes remaining. NLS brought it back to within 10, though, scoring in just five plays. The highlight of the drive was a 27-yard reverse by Essler, who later scored from six yards out. A failed two point conversion attempt left the score at 35-25 with 3:37 remaining. This time, NLS decided not to opt for the onside kick, and gave GSL the ball on its own 36 yard line. Clouse earned a hard nine yards before Stuedemann rushed for no gain. The next play, Clouse ran left, and then cut back right while delivering some beautiful stiff arms on a 39-yard gain down to the NLS 15. Stuedemann scored on the next play, as GSL went up 4225. Petersen intercepted Vraa on the Wildcat’s next play, allowing Anderson to kneel the clock out.

mud, but if we wouldn’t have had a race on Tuesday, my legs would have had more in them.” Burr wasn’t the only one that improved at the home meet. Jenny Illg finished in 13th place with a time of 18:30, while Kaylee Venier finished one spot behind her with the same time. Erica Hecksel’s performance was the biggest improvement, according to head coach Jann Savre. “She closed the gap to 20 seconds between our third and fourth runners, helping that team score,” Savre said. While the improvement is nice, “We need to continue to see this as we approach the second half of our season,” Savre said. Though the competition at the home meet was not the same caliber as previous meets, Burr said that it was more “meaningful” since the run in is a memorial to Caty Delwiche. The Panthers traveled to Dassel-Cokato on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Hawks 6-0, but felt they played a tough, competitive game. Though the team gained some extra players in recent weeks, the GSL bench typically looks minuscule compared to their opponents’. Something Collins mentioned Monday night. “They had almost two teams there on the sideline,” Collins said. “These are big schools, and we’re a smaller school. I think we did pretty well, considering our size.” While they’re still searching for that elusive first win, the Panthers seem to be growing as a team, and improving every week. GSL hosts Marshall Public Schools on Thursday, and Mankato Loyola on Friday. The Panthers then welcome Waconia for a Wright County Conference matchup on Saturday.

Sumter Township
Sumter Township Roadside Cutting Notices Persons owning or occupying real estate adjoining a Sumter township road are required to cut all weeds and grass growing in the township road ditches adjacent to their property by October 8, 2013. Ditches need to be cut as to prevent snow from piling on township roads. This also refers to trees, rocks, brush and the like on road right-of-way. Do not place cut weeds and grass on the road surfaces as this causes problems when grading roads. Please take note that without further notice or notification, non-compliance will be corrected by the township and expenses incurred will be charged to the landowners by order of the Sumter Township Board of Supervisors.
