Bouncing back from 1st defeat
GSL volleyball tops Orono in 4, wins Sibley East title; now 15-1
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor fter opening its schedule with nine consecutive victories, the GSL volleyball team dropped its first match, falling in straight games at undefeated Wright County Conference leader Waconia last Tuesday (Sept. 18). In their home gym two nights later, the Panther girls ran into another tough WCC test in Orono — a winner in four of its first five league matches. Tied 1-1 in games, the Spartans moved out to a 21-17 lead late in a potentially pivotal third game. However, a highly experienced GSL team kept its cool and played out the third game with poise. First, junior Steph Klockmann — on her way to an 8-block, 4-kill, 13dig performance — stuffed an Orono attempt at net, putting the service ball into teammate Krissy Garbers’ possession. Garbers, hoping to celebrate her 18th birthday with a Panthers’ victory, collected two points on serve, GSL’s 20th on outside hitter Lexi Kerslake’s clever redirect. Following an exchange of points against the server, Klockmann served and 6-1 GSL middle blocker Clarissa Ober smashed down a kill point that knotted score at 22s. Ober, who would chalk up 28 kills for the match, despite some strong Orono blocking, tallied another to tie the score again at 23-23. Then, with freshman Emily Muetzel serving, Ober thundered down a kill at the end of a lengthy rally. At 24-23, Ober and Kerslake teamed up to block Orono senior Bailey Armstrup for game point. GSL fell behind 8-3 early in the fourth game, but later ran eight unanswereds on setter Courtney Lemke’s serve. Ahead 17-11, the Panthers won the game, 25-18, and the match, 3-1. Garbers said the Panthers did not panic whenever they fell behind. “We had the right mindset,” she said before munching down a birthday cupcake. Head coach “Murf” Schwirtz thought her girls were off their game at times, “playing as if (they) were out of shape.” She attributed some of that to colds and a few nagging injuries. “The best thing about (the Orono) match is the girls found a way to win,” Schwirtz said. “When it came to crunch time,” she added, “the girls stuck together.” Lemke finished with 35 set assists, 22 digs and 5 kills of her own. And the birthday girl added 17 digs and five kills to the effort. ***

Complete Game
Panthers are sharp in 26-6 win at NLS; Litchfield next
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Prior to transporting his football team north to New London-Spicer for the unbeaten Wildcats’ homecoming game last Friday, GlencoeSilver Lake head coach Scott Tschimperle challenged his players. “He said this will be a game that defines us,” senior defensive end Ray Eberhard said. The Panthers had played what Tschimperle labeled “spectacular” halves of football in wins over Holy Family Catholic and Annandale. However, he was looking for more. He was looking for 48 minutes, At New London, he saw his boys score on four of their first five possessions; keep the Wildcats on the NLS side of the 50 until the score was 26-to-zip; dominate the kickcoverage and kick-return games; play turnover-free while covering an NLS fumble and picking off two passes; and top it all off with a 17play march that chewed up 8 minutes and 14 seconds of second-half clock. Final score was 26-6. “It’s the most complete game we’ve had so far,” said sophomore quarterback Keaton Anderson, who ran for a touchdown and passed for two others. “I think we did a good job,” Eberhard agreed. “I’m pleased with the way our kids played for four quarters,” Tschimperle said, noting, too, that the Panthers had their best week of practices, so far. “They played outstanding; no

GSL improved its overall record to 15-1 by winning last Saturday’s Sibley East invitational. The Panthers defeated Springfield (25-17, 25-14), Nicollet (25-9. 2518) and Sibley East (25-18, 27-25) in pool play; then downed Lake Crystal/Wellcome Memorial (25-11, 22-25, 15-12) in the semifinals and Springfield (25-22, 28-26) in the championship match. Schwirtz used Ober in only two of the five matches at Sibley East; allowing her big hitter to rest her ankles the rest of the day. In those two matches, Ober banged down 28 kills, chalked up five blocks and got down for four digs. Lemke had a huge tournament: 115 set assists, 51 digs, 36 kills, four blocks, and 25-for-25 serving (two aces). Overall, GSL’s attack was balanced. Klockmann led with 43 kills, but was closely followed by Lemke’s 36, Garbers (35), Ober (28), Kerslake (15) and Muetzel (4). Same with digs: Garbers 66, Klockmann 55, Lemke 51, Kerslake 49, Muetzel 35 and Cortney Konen 35. *** At Waconia, the Wildcats showed why they lead the Wright County Conference with a 6-0 record — a mark that includes five straightgames wins, plus a 3-1 triumph over Delano. GSL, which was 9-0 in all its matches before stepping on the court last Tuesday, went down in three games by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-20. Ober had 15 kills in 30 attack attempts. Klockmann, meanwhile, was 6-for-23 and Garbers 3-for-18. As a team, GSL scored on 27 of 81 hits, for a match hitting percentage of 33.3. On the other end, the Panthers charted only one block, a first-game solo by Ober. That’s it! One block. Lemke charted 24 set assists, eight digs and a 14-for-14 serving night. ***
question about it, and in all phases,” he said. As a result, GSL now tops the West Division standings in the Wright County Conference with a 2-0 mark. Annandale and New London-Spicer are a game behind, each at 1-1. Litchfield and Dassel-Cokato are each 0-1. The Panthers play host to Litchfield this Friday, with the opening kickoff at Stevens Seminary Stadium set for 7 p.m. *** At New London, the game’s first big play occurred on the opening kickoff.
GSL’s Brandon Ebert sent a linedrive bouncer of a boot away from NLS return specialist Adam Essler into the hands of senior Brady Schmitz, who got past the 25 before Panther tackles leader Ethan Maass “punched” the ball loose. Alex Foss recovered, setting up GSL’s offense at the Wildcats 29. A few snaps later, on fourth down at the 15, all-purpose speedster Ryan Kuester detected a hole in NLS’s man-to-man defense, and broke his route. Anderson, picking up the same read, whistled a lefty strike to the

Panther girls help bolster Olivia shelves
When members of the girls’ soccer team at Glencoe-Silver Lake first learned about the recent fire that devastated the Renville County Food Shelf in Olivia, they asked their coach, Zach Otto-Fisher, if they could do something to help. It wasn’t only a few of the girls, Otto-Fisher recalls; it was the entire team.

And as things have turned out, there was quite a bit they could do and did do. Cedar Hill Orchard, for one, donated 10 cases of apples. Someone else donated eggs. Others simply turned over money donations to the kids.
Region III champion
Kim Moore, a member of Team Pack Rat and driver of Pack Rat VII in the 2-wheel-drive classification, is the National Tractor Pullers Association’s Region III champion for the 2012 pulling season. The team is based in Glencoe and North Mankato.
On Sept. 14, Otto-Fisher and his four captains — Taylor Breidenbach, Kaitlyn Cohrs, Mercy Rakow and Yodee Rivera — went shopping for items of greatest need on the shelf’s list of needs. They purchased things like the following items: Diapers. Baby food. Fresh fruits. In all, the girls of the Glencoe-Silver Lake soccer have raised more than $350 in items and cash to a temporary food shelf. But there’s more. Prior to Otto-Fisher and the captains making a delivery Sept. 20, each member of the team added personal food items to the load.

GSL teams 2nd at Caty Delwiche run
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor If officials determined a cross country team’s score by adding up its top four places, Delano’s boys would have won last Tuesday’s Waconia Run of the Lakes Invitational handily with a mere 20 points — the result of four top 10 places; specifically, a first, second, eighth and ninth. Glencoe-Silver Lake — with its fifth, sixth, 10th and 15th — would have finished well behind with 36. But cross country officials tally together a team’s five best places. And because GSL sophomore Jac Chelman (18th overall) was signficantly faster than Delano’s fifth runner (49th), the Panthers won the team title with (36+18) 54 points to Delano’s (20+49) 69. Chalk one up for depth! *** GSL’s boys beat out eight other teams to win Waconia’s meet. Leading the way were Jalen Metcalf, Brandon Richter, Isiah Herout and James Tichy.

GSL soccer much better in rematch
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor The first time Glencoe-Silver Lake and Mound-Westonka boys’ soccer teams met on a playing pitch this season, it was no contest. Indeed, the host White Hawks drubbed GSL, 8-0, that Aug. 30 afternoon. Last Tuesday’s (Sept. 18) rematch in Glencoe looked like more of the same, after Mound-Westonka freshman Alex LaFortune beat the GSL defense for a first-minute goal. But things were not the same. Although winless (0-8-1) in their first nine starts, the Panthers have added quality depth since Aug. 31. They also are better getting the hang of new coaches Colin Kerslake and Randy Wilson, and the new system being taught. Trailing 1-0, GSL began making some advances to the

Hearing that fire had depleted the Renville County Food Shelf in Olivia,
the GSL girls’ soccer team decided to help out.

Indeed, the more the better. The team has won only two of their first 10 matches this fall sports season. But as some folks in Renville County have learned; these Panthers truly are winners. Way to go, girls!

Augsburg Centennial Singers to perform at City Center on Oct. 11
The Augsburg Centennial Singers will appear in concert at the Glencoe City Center at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11. The concert, which features familiar hymns, barbershop and sacred music, is sponsored by the Glencoe City Center and Glencoe American Legion Post 95. Tickets are available from Hannah Huttner, events coordinator at the Glencoe City Center, 1107 E. 11th St., 320864-6405, or from Legion Post Commander Al Gruenhagen at 320-510-1294. Under the direction of Al Reesnes, the 60-member Augsburg Centennial Singers take their name from the 100th anniversary of the first Augsburg gospel quartet to visit Norway in the 1890s. The Centennial Singers have made two trips to Norway, a concert tour in Florida and several southwestern states. The Centennial Singers will present a series of concerts in Arizona next February. The Augsburg Centennial Singers have been a part of the Twin Cities music scene for 20 years. The Centenial Singers were formed to commemorate the Augusburg College tradition on the Minneapolis campus. From the late 1800s to the 1960s, gospel quartets traveled each summer appearing most often in churches affliliated with the Lutheran Free Church that supported the college.

middle of the end zone, where Kuester was running all alone. Not quite 3 minutes into battle, the Panthers led, 7-0. Three snaps and a short punt later, Anderson and the GSL offense were back at it. From mid-field, fullback Dalton Clouse ran for five yards and Kuester went for six. Then, Clouse powered forward on three straight carries for 13 yards. On second down from the NLS 26, Anderson pulled the ball from Clouse’s gut and turned up the field. “Their end crashed down on Clouse,” Anderson said. Picking up two “excellent” downfield blocks from Kuester — who “pancaked” an NLS safety, according to Tschimperle — and end Reed Dunbar, Anderson scampered all the way to paydirt. Now 7:05 into the game, GSL led, 14-0. A holding penalty helped stall GSL’s third possession, but the offense — set up by a 20-yard punt return by Maass — marched 41 yards in 11 plays to score again with 2:01 to go in the first half. At intermission, GSL had seven first downs plus three touchdowns; NLS three first downs and only 43 yards of total offense. *** Like the first half, the initial play of the second half was a big play. This time, Maass returned the NLS kickoff 33 yards to the GSL 47. Then it was Clouse for 5, Clouse for 4, Clouse for 3, and Clouse for 4. After that, Kuester for 5, Kuester for 2, Clouse for 13, Kuester for 13, and finally Kuester for a 4yard TD, “We just pounded them up the middle,” Anderson said. Clouse, who rushed 23 times for 108 yards (4.7 ypc), many coming after the initial hit, “ran with a purpose,” Tschimperle said. He thought Kuester ran hard and blocked hard. Speaking of blocking, Tschimperle said his offensive line made a big leap forward last Friday. “I like the way we came off the ball,” he said. The offense’s powerful final statement began after a Travis Rothstein interception at the GSL 10; and with 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Seventeen rushing plays later, the Panthers turned the ball over on downs at the NLS 15, The clock showed 4:26 remaining in the fourth quarter. “We came ready to play,” Anderson said. *** — WILL linebacker Keenan Mehlos (shoulder) had his arm in a sling, the result of an injury in the Annandale game. Colton Lueders started in his place, and got some help from Eric Thalmann. Tschimperle said GSL got through the New LondonSpicer game without any new sidelining injuries. — Tschimperle thought the defense “really got after it” in New London. He noted, in particular, the improvements of the trio of players who rotate at the two tackle spots. Indeed, Josh Von Berge picked up one of GSL’s sacks. Tschimperle said his stoppers finished their tackles and did a great job of “swarming” to the ball. — GSL’s eighth-graders are 2-0, having notched a pair of shutout wins. The seventh-graders beat Litchfield and are 1-0. — Friday’s game with Litchfield is another “Tackle Cancer” event. The Minneota Football Coaches Association and the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund are teaming to raise money for cancer research and community support. Fans are encouraged to bring donations to the game. — Litchfield is coming off the thrills of a last-minute (3534) victory over St. Cloud Cathedral. Leading the Dragons is senior Zach Kinny, a three-year starter at quarterback. “Everytime we play them, it’s a battle,” Tschimperle said. — GSL ranks eighth in the latest Class AAAA state poll. Section 2’s Hutchinson (3-0) is fourth and Marshall (3-0) seventh.

last line of the Hawks’ defense. Suddenly, senior forward Alfredo Zumbrano — one of the late additions from Sibley East — jumped on a loose ball in the Mound-Westonka box and booted it in. With 8:37 remaining in the first half, the match was tied! About four minutes later, playing in the 35th minute, and once again in front of the MW goalie, junior Nick Jenkins beat a Mound-Westonka defender to the ball, resulting in a second GSL tally. Incredibly, the halftime score read as follows: GSL 2, Mound-Westonka 1. The lead would hold up nearly to the mid-way point of the second half. However, the White Hawks capitalized on a Panther foul, whistled in the 58th minute against an attacking GSL forward. Play moved to the other end of the field for a successful penalty kick by Sander Lee. Four minutes later, Jesse Orenge converted a secondchance opportunity into Mound-Westonka’s second goahead goal of the day. The White Hawks, who arrived at Stevens Seminary Stadium with a 3-1-2 record in the Wright County Conference, scored one more time, for a 4-2 victory. Strong to the finish, MoundWestonka left town knowing they were in a competitive match its second time around with GSL.
