GSL volleyball opens schedule with 2 wins
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor The Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team is off to a 2-0 start. At home last Tuesday evening (Aug. 28), “Murf” Schwirtz’s girls won their opener in straight games (25-23, 25-16, 25-11) over Watertown-Mayer. Two nights later, the Panthers won their Wright County Conference opener in four games (22-25, 31-29, 25-20, 25-14) over Holy Family Catholic in Victoria. After a rivalry match at Norwood Young America last night (Sept. 4), GSL is off until a WCC match at Mound-Westonka on Sept. 11. Its next home match is Sept. 13 with Dassel-Cokato. *** Only the first game was tight in the Panthers’ match with WatertownMayer, Ahead 20-19, GSL picked up a point on a Royals passing error; then got two more on back-to-back kill hits by senior middle-blocker Clarissa Ober. With the Panthers ahead 2320, the WM bench went for a timeout. When the action resumed, GSL’s

Explosive Beginning
Panthers score 1st 40 against the Fire; at Hutchinson next
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor xplosive. That word accurately described the GSL football team during the first half of its Opening Night game with visiting Holy Family Catholic last Friday at Stevens Seminary Stadium. Scoring the first six times they possessed the ball, the Panthers raced out to a 40-0 lead while showing off a prime stable of speedy playmakers in Ryan Kuester (3 touchdowns), Dalton Clouse (2), Jake Stuedemann (1), and Ethan Maass (1). The final score swas 46-21. “Our kids played outstanding football,” head coach Scott Tschimperle said about the fast start. And it was not just the offense. GSL led 27-0 before Holy Family notched its initial first down. Indeed, the Fire netted a paltry 11 yards with their first four possessions. Things are not expected to come so easily this Friday, when the Panthers travel to Hutchinson for battle with the Tigers — 49-0 victors at Little Falls in their opener. Besides McLeod County bragging rights, the game’s outcome figures to have huge impacts on Wright County Conference divisional races and in landing a desirable Section 2 (Class AAAA) seed. Opening kickoff is 7 p.m. Here’s how GSL got explosive with Holy Family. • Starting from its own 22, HFC gained three yards with its first two carries; then lost four when senior GSL defensive end Ray Eberhard sacked Fire quarterback Ben Baker at the 21. The Panthers did a better job at converting third-down situations on their first possession, as sophomore QB Keaton Anderson scrambled for

Seeing the middle clogged, GSL swept senior sprint champ Kuester around the right side of the HFC defense for a 10-yard TD. “They were loading the box pretty good, with eight or nine guys,” Tschimperle said, noting that the Panthers were OK with taking what

champions will be crowned, but no more. In other words, no conference title game. Come the winter, and things will be similar in basketball, but with many more games. GSL, as part of the smaller-enrollment members in the West Division, will play other West teams (Annandale, Dassel-Cokato, Litchfield and New London-Spicer) twice each (home and away), and each East Division member (Delano, Holy Family Catholic, Hutchinson, Mound-Westonka, Orono and Waconia) once apiece. Again, two division champions per activity will be crowned. No conference title games for boys’ basketball or girls’ basketball.

GSL girls’ soccer nets 7 goals in 1st triumph
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor After failing to score in two-goal losses to Willmar and Worthington, the GSL girls’ soccer team erupted for seven goals and notched its first win of 2012 last Tuesday (Aug. 28). Playing on the road against the PACT Charter School of Ramsey, Minn., the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. Kaitlyn Cohrs, a senior attacker, led the scoring parade with a three-goal hat trick. Kenzie Boozikee, Alex Brusven, Addie Luehrs and Yodee Rivera each had single tallies. Boozikee, Rivera and Maddie Kuehn received credit for assists. GSL’s domination may have been most clearly defined in the shots-on-goal totals, which favored the Panthers, 33-4. Senior goalie Brianna Elsing picked up the shutout. In all, 19 GSL girls got into the action. *** The Panther girls lost their Wright County Conference opener by a 3-1 score last Thursday at Mound-Westonka. As a result, GSL took records of 1-3 overall and 01 in the WCC into last night’s (Sept. 4) match with Delano. Next home match is Sept. 11 with Waconia.

GSL boys’ soccer looking for 1st win
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor August proved to be a tough opening month for the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ soccer team. Heading into last night’s (Sept. 4) home tilt with Delano, GSL was winless in five starts. The latest losses were 5-0 at Waconia and 8-0 at Mound-Westonka, giving the Panthers their first tastes of the rugged competition found in the Wright County Conference. However, the club continues to add depth, and hope remains alive. Head coach Parker Kerslake only had 12 players for the Waconia match, and said his team eventually wore down against the deeper Wildcats. Since then, the Panthers have picked up additional players from Sibley East via the two districts’ continuing cooperative agreement with regard to soccer. That brings the total to five. All in all, GSL’s varsity roster now lists 18 names — including one eighth-grader and one ninth-grader. With improved depth, coach Kerslake has gone to work on strengthening GSL’s defense. A switch in formations, he hopes, does a better job of pushing opposing attacks outside, away from prime scoring areas. *** How GSL’s boys might have lined up in head coach Colin Kerslake’s 1-3-2-3-2 formation for their home opener Sept. 4 with Delano: Goalie — Parker Kerslake (grade 12). Defense (from right) — Gustavo Villalobos (11), sweeper Keith Collins (10), Quentin Dalbec (11). Midfield — Joe Fehrenbach (12), Sawyer Moser (12). Attack — Aaron Rhodes (11), Nick Jenkins (12), Eduardo Herrera (11), Strikers — Alfredo Zambrano (12), Javier Calva (12) Others who might get varsity playing time are: juniors Ismael Calderon, Michael Donnay, Daniel Rodriguez, and Cody Wendorff; sophomore Kyle Beck; ninth-grader Alfredo Pena, and eighth-grader Jacob Fehrenbach. *** — GSL’s boys are at Hutchinson for a WCC match Thursday; then back home for a rematch with Waconia on Sept. 11. Both starts are at 7 p.m. Mound-Westonka is here Sept. 18. That start is 5 p.m.

play turned sloppy. Three straight unforced errors capped a 4-0 Royals run, tied the score 23-23, and produced a time-out from GSL’s Schwirtz. This time, the Panthers returned to the court with focus and a plan. “I needed to get the ball to Ober,” said Courtney Lemke, the Panthers’ senior setter. Lemke did just that, setting up her 6-1 teammate for a ball Ober sent over the net and to the floor with a backhanded flick of her right wrist. Trailing 24-23, the Royals dug up GSL ninth-grader Emily Muetzel’s serve and set up outside hitter Ashley Vealetzek for a powerful hit at net. Rising from the other side of the net, though, was Ober, who took the full force of Vealetzek’s thunder, blocking it cleanly to the floor for game point. The second game saw GSL race ahead 14-5 and eventually notch a 25-16 win — with Lemke serving for the game’s final point. GSL tallied the first four points of the third game; one of them a service ace by junior middle-hitter Stephanie Klockmann. At 7-4, the Panthers tallied eight unanswereds on freshman Cortney Konen’s serve. The tallies went back-andforth the remainder of the match. An Ober block took it to 24-9, and an Ober kill hit closed out the match at 2511. “I think we just felt confident once we got through that first game,” Ober said. Confident, Lemke said, but

the Fire was giving. Tschimperle said Kuester ran hard with his pad levels low — “like a senior is supposed to run.” • HFC netted four yards with its second possession, punting the ball from its own 24. Six plays later, GSL was back in the Fire end zone, The key play was a broken play Anderson turned into a 30-yard keeper to the 3. After bobbling the snap, Anderson was unable to make the handoff, but did well with improvisation. Stuedemann tallied the TD, aided by key blocks by Kuester and fullback Clouse. • HFC started its third possession from the 31. Three plays later, the Fire lined up to punt from the 31. The snap was high, but Derek Ogren snagged it and got off the kick, which resulted in a short GSL return. But HMC was flagged for illegal procedure, and the Panthers decided to have Ogren punt again. “We thought maybe they’d snap it over his head,” Tschimperle said. Ogren got off the punt, which All-WCC safety Ethan Maass came forward to receive. After jabbing a step to the left, Maass bolted, instead, to his right, turning the corner on his way to paydirt — which he reached after one last clever cutback at the 7. With 59 seconds still to play in the first quarter, it was 21-0. • Again with its fourth possession, HFC failed to move the chains; this time being stopped on downs at its 39. After GSL was sent back to its own territory, due to a chop block, it got back to third-and-16. With HFC aware of Kuester’s jets, Anderson sent him in motion to the left, but, instead, slipped the ball into Clouse’s mitts. Finding a hole created by trap blocking, Clouse shot straight ahead, past every level of the Fire defense. Nobody caught him, either, as Clouse scored standing after a 45-yard dash. • With a shade under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, HFC picked up its initial first down. But it was three plays and a punt and a 25yard Maass return after that. GSL moved the chains once; then sent Kuester in motion and sprung Clouse loose again for a 41-yard TD. • Five HFC snaps later, the Fire turned over the ball on downs. Then on second down from the Fire 47, Anderson escaped pressure and zipped a completion to Kuester over the middle. Kuester did the rest, eluding Fire defenders and speeding off for another six points. With that, it was 40-0. *** — Two Panther three-year starters played both ways against Holy Family Catholic. Reed Dunbar lined up as a right end on offense and as a right end on defense. Sophomore Tanner Grack provided some support on offense. Brandon Ebert lined up as the left end on offense and as the STUD linebacker on defense. Senior Derek Bratsch, a starting cornerback on defense, provided some support on offense. Junior Colton Lueders, the projected starter at the STUD linebacker, could not go because of back spasms. Carter Pinske, another junior, started as the other outside linebacker, but came out of the action with a migraine headache. He was replaced by Alek Foss, who finished with a team-best seven solo tackles. Otherwise, GSL came out of the Holy Family game in good health. — Elsewhere in the WCC last Friday, Annandale defeated Waconia, 30-23; Delano edged Dassel-Cokato, 28-27; Litchfield topped Orono, 3028; and New London-Spicer romped over Mound-Westonka, 41-7. Besides GSL at Hutchinson this Friday, Delano is at Annandale; Litchfield is at Holy Family Catholic; Waconia is at New London-Spicer; Dassel-Cokato is at Orono; and Mound-Westonka is at Princeton (nc). Elsewhere in Section 2 (Class AAAA), Marshall downed Mankato East, 42-7, and New Ulm lost, 34-18, to Belle Plaine. Marshall is at Fairmont this Friday, while Mankato East plays host to Faribault and New Ulm travels to St. Peter.

Kaczmarek excited to open her own day care
By Alyssa Schauer Staff Writer t is so surreal. It is honestly a dream come true,” Heather Kaczmarek, gushed about opening her own inhome day care business. Kaczmarek, 22, is set to open her day care, “Heather’s Lil’ Sunshines,” on Tuesday, Sept. 4. “Opening a day care is always something I have wanted to do. I have always, always loved taking care of kids. Since I was in elementary school, I have had the desire to take care of other children,” she said. Kaczmarek, a 2008 graduate of Glencoe-Silver Lake High School, attended St. Cloud Techinical and Community College for two years, where she earned her associate of applied science degree in child and adult care and education. “While in college, I worked at New Horizon Academy, where I interned, and was then offered a position in their school-aged classroom,” Kaczmarek said. She was employed at New Horizon for two years before moving back to Silver Lake. “When I moved home, I was offered a job at Faith Child Care. I loved working there. I loved the atmosphere, and I loved the kids. I looked forward to going there every single day, and I had never had a job where I could say, ‘I’m so excited to go to work,’” she laughed. While employed at Faith Child Care, Kaczmarek also worked at St. Pius X Catholic School in Glencoe as a preschool teacher for one year. “I wanted to try out the job, to see whether or not I preferred working at a day care or working as a teacher. After a year there, I realized it wasn’t my ideal dream job, and I decided to open my own day care,” she said. Kaczmarek earned her “Family Care Provider” license from McLeod County and the state of Minnesota after a series of house inspections from social services and from the state fire marshal. She is licensed to care for up to 12 children, ranging from ages 6 weeks to schoolaged. Kaczmarek currently has nine children registered for her day care. “I took the class through the county in April. It was basically a refresher course. Most of it was information I learned at St. Cloud. It was great to learn the rules of licensing, and the instructor gave information on how to child-proof your house, etc.,” she said. Kaczmarek said rules of licensing include meeting building requirements. “We have to have a certain width for windows, and, of course, our water and refrigerator have to be at a certain temperature,” she said.

Heather Kaczmarek, 22, is set to open her own inhome day care business, “Heather’s Lil’ Sunshines” on Tuesday, Sept. 4. “This is always something I have wanted to do,” Kaczmarek said. She currently has nine children registered for her day care services. “The fire marshal came to inspect our furnace, wiring and to make sure we had enough exits in case of fire,” she said. To prepare for her in-home day care, Kaczmarek had to purchase a lot of furnishings, such as high chairs, changing tables, strollers and dishes. “I have had so many donations. It was unbelievable to see the support from family and friends. It is so appreciated,” she said. Currently, Kaczmarek is working on making her play room “kid-friendly” by filling it with a kitchen set, various toys, educational material and many books, and outfitting the room in bright colors and fun decorations. “When I open my day care, I plan to incorporate different activities, like crafts and other preschool activities for the appropriate ages,” she said. She said she also plans on spending a lot of time outside when the weather is nice. “I love taking the kids to the park and going for walks. “I’m very excited to be starting this journey with one of my best friends, Candace (Posusta). She is so supportive. She also just opened her own day care this summer, and I am excited to be able to share ideas and coordinate with her,” Kaczmarek said. Kaczmarek said she also learned a lot from co-workers, Corrine Johnson and Connie Jurek. “I worked under Connie while employed at Faith Child Care, and she has helped me and prepared me for the job, so I have an idea of what it will all entail,” she said. “Corrine and Connie are my role models. They are wonderful,” she added. “I think I am most excited to have all the kids in my house. I am excited to fill my house with all those laughs, screams, cries, and, of course, more laughter,” she laughed. “I’ve never loved doing something so much.” Kaczmarek is the daughter of Darrell and Rhonda Kaczmarek, and her day care, “Heather’s Lil’ Sunshines,” will be located at her home at 218 Center St. in Silver Lake.
