S
State champions!
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
Who says cats and birds don’t play well to-
gether?
The Plato Blue Jays were feeling fine about
felines after claiming the third state Class C
championship in team history on Labor Day –
with a very large assist coming from a Wildcat
that roared.
Winsted Wildcats draftee Tony Kley was an
easy choice for tournament MVP on a team
that put up a number of big-time performances
after he earned the victory in four of the Blue
Jays’ five state wins. He pitched 23 innings
over three weekend games, taming the opposi-
tion while the Plato bats thundered, and etch-
ing his name forever into Blue Jays’ lore.
“It feels really good,” Kley said of helping
pitch Plato to the championship. “I wouldn’t
trade this for anything.”
After striking out 15 batters over eight in-
nings of work in a 3-0 shutout of Lamberton in
the state opener on Saturday, Aug. 29, Kley
was back on the hill to start Plato’s first game
of championship weekend against New Lon-
don-Spicer in Cold Spring on Saturday, Sept. 5.
The results were similar, with Kley tossing
eight innings of shutout ball with 10 strikeouts.
Plato surged to a 6-0 victory with outfielder
Tyler Lang swinging the biggest bat, going 3-
for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. First
baseman Ben Slater went 2-for-4 with one run
and one RBI.
That victory advanced Plato into a state
quarterfinal against Cannon Falls on Sunday,
Sept. 6 in Watkins. In the lone state game not
pitched by Kley, Brownton Bruins draftee
Dylan McCormick claimed the win in relief of
Blue Jays starter Cody Hallahan as the Blue
Jays downed the Bears 8-5.
“A couple of our pitchers stepped up when
Tony couldn’t go and they did well,” said third
baseman Brian “Boomer” Graupmann, a mem-
ber of all three Plato state champion teams
from 1996, 2007, and now 2015.
Plato never trailed, scoring a pair of runs in
both the first and second innings and taking a
5-1 lead into the fifth inning. Cannon Falls
chased Hallahan after 4-2/3 innings by hanging
a three-spot on the board in the frame. Mc-
Cormick squelched the uprising in the fifth and
went on to toss 2-1/3 innings of one-run, one-
hit ball before giving way to Chris Odegaard
for the save.
Lang, and designated hitter Joe Nix both
went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while shortstop
Matt Odegaard went 2-for-5 with four runs
scored and second baseman Chris Odegaard
was 2-for-5 with two RBI; first baseman Ben
Slater was 2-for-5 with one RBI.
The Cannon Falls victory pushed Plato into
the state semifinals Sunday evening against
Nisswa.
Adam Prehn took the mound against the
Lightning, who scored two runs – one earned –
in the third inning to hold a 2-0 lead before the
skies opened up and halted play in the fourth
inning.
Torrential rains forced the suspension of play
until the suns came out to dry out Clippers
Park in Watkins for a Labor Day full of base-
ball on Monday, Sept. 7.
“Everyone was kind of mad when that game
was suspended, but I knew we needed that
break,” Graupmann said. “The game was going
(Nisswa’s) way and it was nice to get that
break in there and come back ready to go.”
A day of rest in hand, Kley relieved Prehn as
the suspended game commenced in the fifth in-
ning on Monday morning. Any momentum
Nisswa held had dissipated with the rain as
Plato seized control of the contest with one run
in the opening frame and two more in the sixth
to take a 3-2 lead that held up as the final
score.
Catcher Nolan Lepel and Slater each had two
hits with one run scored apiece, while Left
Fielder Kyle Panning also crossed home plate
once. Right fielder Tony Beringer and Chris
Odegaard each logged an RBI. Graupmann
also had two hits in the victory.
Kley allowed just two hits and one walk in
his five innings, striking out four Lightning
batters.
However, his greatest feat was yet to come.
After punching their ticket for the state final,
the Blue Jays watched Crow River Valley
League rival Green Isle rally to defeat Howard
Lake 13-7 and earn the other berth in the final.

The Plato Blue Jays won their third Class C state championship on Monday, Sept.
7 by means of a 14-6 defeat of Green Isle in the title game at Clippers Park in
Watkins. (Pictured clockwise from top right) Plato players hoisted the team’s first
state title trophy since 2007; Blue Jays third baseman Brian “Boomer” Graupmann
has been a member of all three Plato state title teams, having also played on the
1996 and 2007 squads; Blue Jays players mobbed one another after the final out
was recorded; Winsted Wildcats draftee Tony Kley was named tournament MVP
after earning the victory in all four Blue Jays’ state wins; Matt Odegaard scores his
second run of the title game, he also drove in four runs while going 3-for-6 at the
plate with a pair of doubles.
Panthers storm to 3-0
By Tom Carothers
Sports Editor
Not upset-minded visitors
nor unwelcome weather de-
lays could not keep the Glen-
coe-Silver Lake football team
from a less-than swift comple-
tion of a 3-0 record.
The Panthers overcame
both a scrappy opponent and a
two-hour lightning-filled in-
termission during the third
quarter to defeat Annandale
40-13 in GSL’s home opener
on Friday, Sept. 4.
It was a tale of two games –
the first two halves that were
played before a two-hour long
suspension of play due to
lightning and heavy rains, and
what multi-back Teddy Pe-
tersen termed a “third half”
after play resumed.
Before Mother Nature inter-
vened, the Panthers struggled
to maintain a lead. GSL never
trailed, but led just 14-7 at the
half on a first-quarter touch-
down run by halfback Carsen
Streich and a second quarter
interception return for a score
by defensive tackle Peyton
Sell.
That edge was slashed to
14-13 as the Cardinals
marched downfield for a score
on an 18-play drive that con-
sumed seven minutes and 45
seconds from the clock.
However, all the momen-
tum Annandale had was gob-
bled up by a storm front that
announced its arrival in the
form of a thunderous bolt of
lightning just as the visitors
were set to kick off.
Play was suspended as
patricipants and fans alike
headed for cover. For the sec-
ond year in a row, GSL’s
home football opener was in-
terrupted by foul weather.
For the next two hours,
lightning and rain kept the
contest in stasis. While it was
an awkward break, Petersen –
who made a speech to his
team as it huddled in a shed
on the north end of the stadi-
um – said the interval was ad-
vantageous for the home side.
“We played a decent first
half, but it wasn’t up to par for
us,” Petersen said. “Annan-
dale is a good team, and hats
off to them, but we just had to
refocus – guys had to concen-
trate on their assignments and
what they were doing rather
than bigger things.”
The storm finally passed on
and midway through the 10

The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team
opened the season in fine style by defeating visiting
Worthington on Tuesday, Sept. 8, but the Panthers
were blanked 7-0 in their first road game at Mound
Westonka two days later.
GSL and Worthington were tied 0-0 at halftime of
their contest, before forward Shelby Clouse was
knocked down in the box five minutes into the sec-
ond half to earn a penalty kick. Midfielder Emily
Thalmann converted the kick for a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans leveled the score at 1-1 on a goal ten
minutes later and the squads appeared destined for a
tie at the final horn.
However, Thalmann found Clouse on a crossing
pass which the senior directed into the net with just
seven seconds remaining to make a 2-1 winner out
of the home side.
“I’m very proud of how they never stopped fight-
ing and got the win late into that game,” coach Zach
Otto-Fisher said.
The outcome was not so sweet at Mound Weston-
ka, with the hosts overwhelming GSL from the start
en route to the shutout win. The Panthers hosted
New Prague on Tuesday, Sept. 8, after the Chronicle
went to press.

Spikers sweep
their way to 3-0

An impressive season-open-
ing run continued for the
Glencoe-Silver Lake volley-
ball team last week as the
Panthers swept both section
rival Norwood Young Ameri-
ca at home and conference foe
Mound Westonka on the road,
winning both matches without
losing a single game.
GSL, which has yet to lose
a game in any of its three
matches this season, improved
to 3-0 with a 25-23, 25-17,
25-19 defeat of the Raiders in
front of a full house and a
spirited home crowd on Tues-
day, Sept. 1.
Setter Layne Herrmann tal-
lied 22 assists, while outside
hitter Taylor Novak posted
nine kills. Libero Emily Muet-
zel notched 18 digs.
Multiple members of the
team remarked at the over-
whelming spirit of their home
fans, many of whom were
dressed in their “poolside”
best and made for a raucous
atmosphere throughout the
contest.
“We love our fans,” middle
hitter Maddy Kalenberg said.
“They are great. They always
pump us up and get us jacked
when we do something good.”
The Panthers packed up a
little of that home cooking
and took it on the road two
nights later, where they over-
whelmed the White Hawks
25-6, 25-12, 25-11.

p.m. hour, play resumed.
When it did, it was with a
completely different GSL
team.
The Panthers began the
“third half” by seizing a 22-
13 lead following a 2-yard
touchdown run by Streich
and a two-point conversion
pass from quarterback Luke
Frahm to tight end Alex
Schrader.
Linebacker Cameron Chap
recovered a fumble on the
first snap of Annandale’s en-
suing drive and that turnover
was converted into another
touchdown courtesy of a 5-
yard scoring run by fullback
Nathan Schuch.
The Cardinals’ next drive
was terminated on an inter-
ception by defensive back
Tyler Ehrke. Once again,
that turnover was magically
turned into points – this time
on a scoring run by Petersen
to make the score 34-13 in
favor of GSL midway
through the final quarter.
One final touchdown on a
run from Frahm brought the
count to its eventual final of
40-13 as the final moments
ticked away on a late, but
spirited evening at Stevens
Seminary Stadium.
“We played a good ‘third
half,’” Petersen said. “Guys
really came out and did their
jobs. Our senior leadership
really stepped up. The jun-
iors and sophomores saw
that and got after it them-
selves.
“We saw that we could get
upset on our own field if we
didn’t step it up.”
Frahm led all ground-gain-
ers with 168 yards rushing
on 17 carries. Petersen hit
the century mark on the dot
with 13 carries.
Linebacker Nick Brelje led
the GSL defense with 10
tackles. Brelje, Ehrke and
linebacker Tristan Weber –
who recovered a first-half
fumble – shared the team
lead with five solo tackles
apiece.
The Panthers, currently
ranked No. 2 in Class AAA,
host Holy Family Catholic
next Friday night. The Fire
are 1-2 overall and bring a
two-game losing streak into
Glencoe for the matchup.
As for the Panthers, it is
high times at 3-0 with an op-
portunity of 4-0 on the hori-
zon.
“It feels great, especially
after we began 1-3 last year,”
Petersen said of the team’s
perfect start. “We hope to
keep building off of this – as
long as we keep winning, it’s
all good.”

Plato manager Adam
Dammann tabbed Chris Ode-
gaard to start the final, but
with Kley quick at the ready.
The game began immacu-
lately for Plato as Chris Ode-
gaard leading off the contest
with a home run and Nix driv-
ing in Lepel to make the score
2-0 before the Blue Jays took
the field for the first time.
However, Dammann’s hand
was quickly drawn as Ode-
gaard walked two and allowed
an RBI single without record-
ing an out in the bottom of the
frame.
Kley came on three batters
into the contest with five in-
nings already under his belt
for the day. The mighty
draftee looked initially mortal
as Green Isle tapped him for
an RBI double and a two-run
single before the opening
stanza closed with the Irish up
4-2.
Green Isle increased its ad-
vantage to 6-2 on a walk and a
two-run homer in the bottom
of the sixth.
But that was that.
From there, Kley allowed
nary a run nor even a hit for
the next seven innings.
With the rising tide quelled,
the Plato offense got back to
work at righting the ship.
The Blue Jays sliced Green
Isle’s lead in half in the third
on an RBI double by Lepel
and an RBI sacrifice fly by
Graupmann.
That inning was mere pro-
logue for a six-run fifth high-
lighted by a two-RBI double
from Panning and a three-RBI
two-batter from Matt Ode-
gaard as Plato snatched the
lead for good.
The Blue Jays scored three
more in the seventh and added
a good-measure tally in the
eighth en route to an eight-run
championship victory.
A soft fly ball to the outfield
was all that Green Isle could
muster up on Kley’s final
pitch of a countless number
for Plato and as it was secured
for the final out of the game
and season, it set off a riotous
celebration in the center of the
infield as Blue Jays players
leapt onto one another in a
joyous hog pile.
Kley wrapped his time with
his adopted team with a non-
complete game nine-inning
performance and nine more
strikeouts to bring his state
total to 36 in 30 total innings.
When the dust had settled,
Plato held aloft its third state
championship trophy – one to
place next to previous title
hardware earned in 1996 and
2007.
“They are all special, ”
Graupmann said of the titles.
“They’ve all come with a dif-
ferent group of guys, which is
unique. This year, we had the
right group of guys – the right
mix of guys.
“When you combine a pre-
mier pitcher like Tony Kley
with a team like ours, we
knew we’d be tough to beat.”

GSL is off until this coming

The squad remains rightfully

the rest of the season goes,”
Kalenberg said. “I really love
our team and have a good feeling

That still, small voice
“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain: it is His megaphone to
rouse a deaf world.” — C.S. Lewis
W
e read in 1 Kings 19:11-12 about Elijah retreating to a cave feeling the pain of rejection by his countrymen
and fearing for his life. The Lord said to Elijah, “Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And,
behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks be-
fore the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earth-
quake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.” God spoke
directly to his rejection and in turn he gained the right perspective.
More than ever, we need to be listening to that “still small voice.” There are so many voices out there vying for our at-
tention but the “voice of God” is the most important part of our relationship with God. We desperately need to hear from
Him today, especially in the midst of everything happening in our world and our daily pain. The heart of every relation-
ship is communication. If we can’t hear the voice of God then we have no true relationship with God.
A good friend of mine last week, passed into eternity unto eternal life. He came to know that “still small voice” by sur-
rendering his life to God. In return his fear and guilt were replaced by peace and joy. He shared with me one day, that
through his prolonged illness, God finally got his attention, and had he not been ill he may have never taken the time to
listen and thus be saved. How is God trying to speak to you today? Maybe He is speaking to you through His word,
maybe through the “words and works” of Jesus, maybe through His creation or maybe a friend. Take a moment today and
listen to His voice. He longs to commune with you and give you lasting peace.
This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who
urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.
