Achievement gap: Some GSL students doing better than counterparts statewide

The spotlight on the achievement gap of results from state math, science and reading comprehensive exams and graduation rates shows a gap between minorities and students receiving free-and-reduced meal service is narrower at Glencoe-Silver Lake students than their counterparts statewide.
Results from the Minnesota Department of Education show the success levels on state tests and graduation rates between Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Hispanic/Latino students, the district’s largest reportable ethnic minority group, and all other students, as well as students receiving free-and-reduced meal service compared to those not receiving free-and-reduced meal service.
Across Minnesota, third-graders through eighth- and 11th-graders take the state’s MCA math test. Third-graders through eighth- and 10th-graders take the MCA reading test. The MCA science exam is given to fifth-, eighth- and 10th-graders after they complete biology. Students are in the final round of MCA testing.
Statewide, a higher percentage of students exceeded proficiency on the MCA math exam than GSL students, 24 percent to 11 percent. However, GSL students were at or above the levels of students who met or partially met state standards in math, science and reading.
