Annual appointments controversial for Glencoe City Council

An agenda item that should have taken about a minute took the Glencoe City Council over 20 minutes at its annual organizational meeting Tuesday, Jan. 3.
The agenda item at hand:
“Appointments made by the City Council as recommended by Mayor Randy Wilson.    
a. Cemetery Commission – Re-appoint Marlene Robeck
b. Airport Commission – Re-appoint Ken Polifka
c. Light & Power Commission – Appoint Tom Hueser
d. Library Board – Re-appoint Mark Schmidt
e. Park Board – Re-appoint Mary Stoltenberg
f. Planning & Industrial Commission – Reappoint Lynn Exsted and appoint Kevin Dietz to open position
g. City Center Board – 2 open positions”
A motion was made by Council Member John Schrupp and seconded by Council Member Gary Ziemer.
Council Member Al Robeck commented that two very qualified people applied for the Light and Power Commission and he wishes that they could approve both applicants. He also suggested the Council look at the charter so it doesn’t have a standing City Council member on the commissions. Kermit Terlinden also applied. Schrupp has a full appointment to the commission.
Robeck went on to say that he couldn’t vote for the appointment of Dietz, saying the charter says that no former member of the Council shall be appointed to any appointive office or employment with the city until one year after the end of their term.
