Arlene Wagner

Arlene Wagner, 88, of rural Stewart, passed away Sunday, April 28, at her home.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 3, 11 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart, with Pastor Mahlon Bekedam officiating. Organist, Bev Wangerin, and also the BASICS provided music. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Casket-bearers were Randy Wagner, Darryle Wagner, Brice Wagner, Denton Strohschein, Paul Bleck and Mark Maiers.
Arlene Anna Wagner was born a twin Jan. 24, 1931, at her parents’ home in Collins Township, McLeod County. She was the daughter of Fred and Alma (Streich) Rannow. Arlene was not expected to live through the night. Their pastor was called, and she was Baptized that evening. Arlene was later confirmed in her faith at Zion Lutheran Church in West Lynn Township. She grew up in Collins Township, and graduated from the Hutchinson High School.
Arlene was united in marriage to Earl Roy Wagner at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson by Pastor Arthur Koehler June 1, 1952. They made their home in Preston Lake Township. Arlene and Earl farmed together, and enjoyed raising sheep and chickens. They were preparing to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary when Earl passed away May 13, 2017. Mrs. Koehler continued living on their farm.
Prior to their marriage, Mrs. Koehler worked at the Triple D Café in Hutchinson. Following their marriage, she worked part-time for Green Giant, and also at Ma’s Café in Stewart. Mrs. Koehler stayed busy on the farm, too. She was known for her canned pickles and horseradish, all goodness from her beautiful garden. She was also a great cook.
Mrs. Koehler was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart. She taught release time from 1962 to 2004. She was active with W.E.L.C.A, and was involved with the quilting group. Mrs. Koehler was president of the AAL/Thrivent Branch 5929 for many years, and received many gold stars for the group. She participated with home extension, and was a dedicated volunteer for Food for Kidz, Feeding Children International based in Stewart.
Mrs. Koehler is survived by her sisters, Darlene Strohschein of Howard Lake and Hildegard Wagner of Hutchinson, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Alma Rannow; husband, Earl Wagner; brothers-in-law, Lester Strohschein and Myrle Wagner.
The Hughes-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Hector handled the arrangements. Its website is www.hantge.com where online obituaries and a guestbook are available.
