Belle Plaine thumps GSL in section final

A third-consecutive trip to the state tournament just wasn’t in the cards for the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team. The Panthers were forcefully stopped one step short of state by Belle Plaine, which handed its hosts their most lopsided loss of the season, 34-6, in the Section 2AAA championship game on Saturday, Oct. 24.

“We got beat fair and square by a very good football team,” coach Scott Tschimperle said. “We knew that they were a good football team that makes big plays. To beat them, we knew we had to not allow the big play as well as control the offensive line of scrimmage – we didn’t do either.”

It was a sunny, yet brisk and windy day as the two teams met at Stevens Seminary Stadium to determine which would go to state. Initially, it appeared that GSL would be capable of extending the Tigers two decade-plus long state-less streak.

After holding Belle Plaine to a three-and-out on its opening drive of the game, Panthers multi-back Teddy Petersen almost immediately had GSL fans dreaming of victory.

The senior, who returned after a three-game absence due to a sports hernia and played sparingly in the Panthers’ 14-5 defeat of Holy Family Catholic in the sectional opener on Tuesday, Oct. 20, ripped off a 28-yard run on his first carry of the 2AAA final. The run, just GSL’s second offensive play of the afternoon, set the Panthers up at the Tigers’ 24-yard line.
