Blue Jays begin title defense

The Plato Blue Jays began defense of their Class C state championship by going 2-1 over the weekend topping Mayer and Young America after dropping the season opener at Maple Lake.

Plato and Maple Lake went into extra innings on Friday, May 6, after each team was held to a single run through the first nine frames. The Blue Jays notched a run in the top of the 11th, but were felled after the hosts posted a pair of tallies in their final at-bat to claim a 3-2 victory.

Joe Nix took the loss in relief after tossing four innings of five-hit, five-walk ball. One of the two runs Maple Plain touched Nix for in the 11th was earned. Cody Hallahan started the game and threw seven innings, allowing seven hits, two walks and one earned run while striking out five.

Matt and Chris Odegaard each notched one RBI apiece, with Hallahan and Tony Beringer crossing the plate for Plato.
