Blue Jays begin title defense by pummeling Springfield
Plato demonstrated it is every bit ready and willing to defending its Class C state championship as the Blue Jays decimated Springfield 11-1 in their state tournament opener on Sunday, Aug. 21, in Dassel.
The Tigers briefly held a 1-0 first inning lead following a leadoff double and a two-out bloop single off Plato starting pitcher Chris Odegaard.
However, the blemish only appeared to anger the hurler and his teammates.
Matt Odegaard smacked a one-out triple in the bottom of the first and was promptly driven home on a Chris Odegaard single to knot the count at 1-1 heading into the second.
However, that run was merely prologue.
After dismissing Springfield in the top of the second inning, the Blue Jays recorded a half-dozen runs – all with two outs – to take a commanding 7-1 advantage.
Kyle Panning gave Plato the lead for good with an RBI single to score Ben Slater and make the score 2-1, before Adam Prehn came around to score on a misplayed ball off the bat of Matt Odegaard.
