Blue Jays win state championship

Who says cats and birds don’t play well together?

The Plato Blue Jays were feeling fine about felines after claiming the third state Class C championship in team history on Labor Day – with a very large assist coming from a Wildcat that roared.

Winsted Wildcats draftee Tony Kley was an easy choice for tournament MVP on a team that put up a number of big-time performances after he earned the victory in four of the Blue Jays’ five  state wins. He pitched 23 innings over three weekend games, taming the opposition while the Plato bats thundered, and etching his name forever into Blue Jays’ lore.

“It feels pretty good,” Kley said of helping pitch Plato to the championship. “I wouldn’t trade this for anything.”

After striking out 15 batters over eight innings of work in a 3-0 shutout of Lamberton in the state opener on Saturday, Aug. 29, Kley was back on the hill to start Plato’s first game of championship weekend against New London-Spicer in Cold Spring on Saturday, Sept. 5.
