Boys’ cagers end losing skid

In a rescheduled matchup of a weather-postponed contest, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys' basketball team concluded a three-game losing streak with a 61-46 win at Dassel-Cokato on Monday, Feb. 18.
Behind a team-high 18 points from guard Mitchel Jaskowiak, the Panthers led the vast majority of the contest, taking a 28-21 halftime advantage before going on to win by 15 points.
Guard Dane Schwirtz scored 12 points, with forwards Gage Alsleben and Jaden Uecker tallying 11 and eight points, respectively.
The win brought GSL's overall record back to .500 at 11-11 after the team had dropped to its furthest point below the break-even mark after a two-overtime loss to visiting Rockford on Friday, Feb. 15.
After spotting the Rockets an early lead, the Panthers took control of the scoreboard for the majority of the contest before Rockford rallied in the final minutes and the game went to added time tied at 44-all.
It was the third overtime contest in five games for GSL. As with the Panthers' 85-81 win over Watertown-Mayer on Feb. 1, just one overtime session would not solve matters.
Both teams scored five points in the first four minutes of added play, meaning a second overtime was needed to decide the contest.
Unfortunately for the hosts, GSL was unable to conjure up the same kind of magic as it did in the three-overtime thriller against the Royals. This time around, Rockford outscored the Panthers 7-3 in the second overtime and rocketed home with a four-point win.
Forward Gabe Roepke led GSL with 15 points in the loss, followed by Schwirtz with 14 points and Alsleben with 10 points.
The defeat extended the Panthers' skid to a season-high three games, coming on the heels of road losses at Litchfield and Mound Westonka on Feb. 8 and 12, respectively.
Individual statistics were not available for the 62-25 thumping GSL suffered at the talons of the White Hawks to open last week's schedule.
The Panthers, who beat Mound Westonka 66-61 a month ago, posted their lowest scoring output since a 67-25 loss at New Prague on Dec. 8, 2015, in the contest.
Having regrouped with the win at Dassel-Cokato, GSL remained on the road this week. The Panthers played at New London-Spicer on Tuesday, Feb. 19, after the Chronicle went to press, and were slated to play at Annandale and at Watertown-Mayer this coming Friday and Tuesday, respectively.
Heading into Tuesday's matchup at NL-S, GSL was 4-6 in Wright County Conference West play this season. The Panthers defeated the Wildcats 84-69 at home on Jan. 22 for one of those four conference wins. GSL lost 54-47 to visiting Annandale in the first of its three overtime matchups this season on Jan. 25.
The Panthers are currently scheduled to wrap up its regular season schedule at home against Dassel-Cokato on Friday, March 1.
