Boys’ hoopsters split a pair

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team missed out on a chance to return to .500 after a rough second half at Rockford turned a 20-18 halftime lead into a 54-35 loss on Friday, Jan. 26.
After an initial 18 minutes rife with turnovers from both sides, the Panthers clung to their slim two-point lead. However, the hosts found their game in the second half, blitzing the visitors 36-15 after their return from the locker room en route to a 19-point victory.
Forward Kyle Christensen led GSL with 21 points, as just five Panthers scored in all. Guards Mitchel Klockmann and Dane Schwirtz scoring six and five points, respectively. Nine Rockets scored in all on the night.
Three nights earlier, GSL held on for a narrow 56-54 win against visiting Mound Westonka.
The White Hawks, winless in Wright County Conference West play this season, nearly scored their first circuit triumph after battling back from a 27-22 halftime deficit.
However, the Panthers clung to victory to avoid their second three-game losing streak of the season and earn their second conference win of the season.
Christensen again led the way for GSL with 16 points to go with a game-high eight rebounds.
Schwirtz scored 13 points, with forward Gage Alsleben posting 11 points, seven rebounds and a team-high three assists.
The Panthers entered this week with a 7-9 overall record, 2-3 in the WCC West and 3-3 against sectional opponents.
GSL entered the final 10-game stretch of the regular season at New London-Spicer on Tuesday, Jan. 30, after the Chronicle went to press.
The Panthers remain on the road with a trip to Dassel-Cokato on Friday, before returning home to face Belle Plaine and Litchfield on Feb. 8 and 9, respectively.
