Boys' CC wins WCC West championship

By just a scant two points, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ cross-country team earned the Wright County Conference West title at the conference championship meet on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista.
By placing five runners in the top-15 positions, the Panthers were able to overcome Annandale – which placed two in the top four spots – and win the conference crown with 52 points to 54 for the Cardinals.
GSL runners claimed three all-conference nods, led by fifth-place finisher Tony Fischer. Fischer navigated the 5,000-meter course in a time of 17 minutes, 46.43 seconds to pace the Panthers.
Close behind was Connor Hallaway, who placed eighth in a time of 17:50.70 for his all-conference honor.
GSL’s third all-conference honoree was Jakob Rusten, who’s 11th-place finish of 18:22.60 was critical as it came one place in front of an Annandale runner – a swing difference of two points.
Rounding out the Panthers’ scoring on the day was a pair of All-WCC Honorable Mention runs by AJ Anderson Sanchez and Oscar Pena. Anderson Sanchez finished 13th in 18:33.95, while Pena was 15th in 18:42.47.
Also running for GSL were Paul Sievert (22nd, 18:56.08) and Ethan Knudten (19:11.18).
Up next for the conference champion Panthers is the Section 2A meet, which is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday at the Riverside Town and Country Golf Course in Winnebago.
