Boys' hoop takes two on the chin

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team knew that last week was going to be fraught with difficulty.

And it was.

Facing two of the top teams in the Wright County Conference West in Watertown-Mayer and Annandale, the Panthers took two solid losses square on the chin to drop to 4-11 on the season.

“It was sure to be a tough one,” coach Robb DeCorsey said of the two-game stretch. “We really needed to play well – and didn’t.”

Coming off a two-game winning streak, the Panthers opened last week by hosting WCC West newcomer Watertown-Mayer on Tuesday, Jan. 12. The Royals, who have lost just once in conference play, amassed a 31-18 halftime lead on their downtrodden hosts.

“Watertown is good, and long. We struggled – had a lot of shots blocked and made some weak attempts inside,” DeCorsey said. “We were kind of in it for a while, but then the guys got down and we were going through the motions again.”

Buoyed by guard Teddy Petersen, who – playing in his third game back from injury – scored a team-high 14 points in approximately 21 minutes, GSL played the visitors to a near draw in the second half, en route to a 65-51 loss.
