Brewers fall to Isles in opener
It wasn’t the way the Glencoe Brewers wanted to start the season, as the home side fell to Gaylord 7-6 on a sun-soaked afternoon at Vollmer Field.
The visitors took a swift 4-0 lead in the top of the first and carried a 5-3 advantage midway through the contest.
Glencoe fought back with a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth to seize its lone lead of the day at 6-5. The edge proved short-lived, however, as Gaylord rallied with two runs in its final at bat before holding the Brewers at bay in the bottom of the ninth for the one-run win.
A bit of early-season rust was apparent, as Glencoe committed a half-dozen errors to help the visitors to victory. Five of Gaylord’s seven runs were unearned.
Tanner Grack took the loss after 2-2/3 innings of relief for the Brewers. Derek Bratsch started the game, with Colt Trebesch and Stephen Wiblemo also seeing time on the mound.
Ty Christensen claimed his first two hits as a Brewer, going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and two runs scored. Paxton Jordahl also had two hits, with Trebesch – who had the Brewers’ lone extra-base hit with a double – scoring twice as well. Brody Bratsch and Jordahl split Glencoe’s two RBI in a game that saw Gaylord commit three errors of its own.
The Brewers remain on the road this weekend, traveling to Dassel-Cokato for a 7:30 p.m. start on Friday and heading to Young America for a 5 p.m. start on Sunday.
