Brownton City looks at sludge disposal

The city of Brownton is trying to figure out what to do with the sludge that accumulates at its wastewater treatment plant.
 
John Rodeberg, an engineer with Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH) talked about some possible solutions at the City Council’s May 3 meeting.
 
Currently, the city pays $750 per acre on two acres of farmland so that it can spread the sludge across the property. However, the property owners indicate they do not want to continue the practice after this year.
 
City Council Member Tim Olson said the issue is that the sludge doesn’t have enough of the necessary nutrients to make good fertilizer, and it cannot be spread on any land on which edible crops grow, such as beans.
 
Rodeberg said that spreading the sludge over land is the most economical option for getting rid of it.
