Brownton pushing for grocery store demolition on July 26 court date

The City of Brownton scheduled a court date with John Turner, of Rockford, on Friday, June 7, but a request for continuation rescheduled the hearing to Friday, July 26.
The hearing was intended to make a formal decision on the building Turner bought from the city at an auction early last year. The building was on the council’s December 2018 agenda to be razed because of safety hazards, but Turner attended the meeting and convinced the council to give him more time.
The hearing was continued because, according to Brownton City Clerk Ella Kruse, it “sounds like (Turner) ‘didn’t receive the notice to appear,’ so legally, they had to cancel it.”
Turner, who owns a business that sells roofing, siding, windows and cabinets, bought what was formerly known as Nelson’s Market, colloquially known to Brownton residents as the “grocery store,” on 112 Fourth Ave. N. in Brownton. The City of Brownton and its council deemed the building a safety hazard after inspection and noted the building’s dilapidated condition at its December meeting.
