Brownton qualifies for state

After missing out on the Region 7C Tournament in 2015, the Brownton Bruins made good on their return by clinching the regional’s fourth and final state tournament berth by going 2-2 in this year’s bracket.

The Bruins claimed their trip to this season’s state tourney – their first since 2013 –by defeating Glencoe 4-2 in an elimination-round game on Friday, Aug. 12.

Josh Dietz got Brownton on the board with a solo home run to lead off the second inning, but the Bruins found themselves 2-1 heading into the fourth inning. However, Matt Schwichtenberg got his side back level with an RBI single to score Deryk Randt. Three innings later, Brownton took the lead for good at 3-2 as Spencer Glaeser walked before scoring on an RBI double by Ryan Grams.

The Brewers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, before Grams went to the hill in relief of starter Dylan McCormick and ended the threat.

Glencoe again had two on with one out in the eighth, but could not tie the score before the Bruins added a fourth and final tally as Randt’s sacrifice grounder scored Brad Daak in the top of the ninth.
