Bruins rally to win a thriller

A thrilling, come-from-behind 5-4 win at St. Boni on Sunday, July 8, kept the Brownton Bruins out of the Crow River Valley League South Division and set the team up for the final five-game stretch of the regular season.
The Bruins twice trailed their hosts, but battled back to knot the score at 4-4 before Bryce Lindeman scored the eventual winning run from second base on an infield single by Seth Schuette in the top of the ninth inning.
St. Boni, in the midst of a resurgent season after residing at the foot of the league standings for the past several years, took a 2-0 lead in the second and held onto it until Brownton put up a three spot in the top of the fifth.
Mason Goettl drove home Schuette and Daniel Rosenau with a two-run double in the frame before Goettl was himself brought home on a run-scoring single by Ryan Grams to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Bruins.
The Saints scored twice to take a 4-3 edge in the bottom of the sixth before Goettl drove home Schuette with an RBI single in the top of the seventh to level the count at 4-4 until the ninth.
In the ninth, Jason Rosenau drew a leadoff walk, with Lindeman coming on to run. Lindeman was sacrificed over to second base, where he hustled his way all the way home on Schuette’s bouncer deep into the hole at second base. Schuette beat the throw to first as Lindeman slid home with the go-ahead tally.
St. Boni had come perilously close to taking the lead in the bottom of the eighth, before Goettl pitched Brownton out of a jam.
The Saints had two on in scoring position with nobody out before Goettl claimed a strikeout and coaxed a pair infield grounders to get the Bruins out of the inning unscathed before they posted their own winning run shortly thereafter.
Goettl earned the win with a scoreless ninth to finish off a three strikeout, one walk appearance in relief of starter Ryan Grams. Grams went seven innings, scattering eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts and two earned runs.
The win improved Brownton to 5-9 on the season. The Bruins return home for a pair of 7:30 p.m. games this week, hosting Hamburg on Wednesday and Carver on Friday, before finishing out the weekend at Green Isle on Sunday.
