City to ‘explore other options’ for Hennepin Avenue building

Glencoe City Council on Monday night approved exploring other options concerning the proposed demolition of a vacant Hennepin Avenue commercial building (former General Store) as it struggled with the $124,370 low bid for its removal.
“This is an odd occurrence,” said Mayor Randy Wilson. “It hasn’t happened before.” He said past demolition costs were about $6,000 to $8,000, “not $124,000!”
“Is there a rush to tear this down?” asked council member Milan Alexander. “It’s not falling down.”
Council member John Schrupp added that “once we take it (the building) out of there, the lot will be worthless. No one will build there.”
Wilson suggested the city take a look at what it would cost to refurbish the building instead of removing it. “It could be less (than $124,000).”
