City of Brownton’s project may not start until 2017

The city of Brownton’s street and utility project probably won’t get under way until 2017, the City Council heard at its March 8 meeting.
Engineer John Rodeberg of Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH) said that the review of the project by the Rural Development program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is taking longer than anticipated.
“It’s because we’re putting so many different things in the project,” said Rodeberg. He noted that along with street and utility improvements, the comprehensive project also calls for improvements to other items, such as the lift stations, the water tower, meters and the wastewater treatment plant. All of those items take longer to review, he said.
Once the plan is approved by Rural Development, which is providing funding for the estimated $8.37 million project through grants and low-interest loans, the city can advertise for bids.
