City Council finalizes sale started in ’88

In an unusual action, it took the Glencoe City Council two attempts to pass a motion to complete the sale of a parcel of property — which was started in 1988 — to the Proehl family.
At Monday’s meeting, the first motion to complete the sale of .384 acres of land near the Glencoe City Cemetery failed for lack of a second to the motion. The Leo Proehl family owns 1.134 acres of abutting property, and the sale would allow the family to “square up their property.”
After several moments of silence, Council Member Allen Robeck finally asked if the sale would interfere with any pond or storm sewer plans by the city on the west end of Glencoe.
City Administrator Mark Larson said that was unlikely because the property lies between the Proehl property (Reed Drive) and the cemetery road (Glencoe Avenue).
Council Member Kevin Dietz also questioned whether the sale would impact electrical lines in that area.
Larson said most of those lines are on the cemetery property. He said the Proehl property was once an old farm site with a trailer on it. No one lives there now.
Larson said the approval is needed in order for a deed to be made for the property. The late Leo Proehl began the process in 1988, but no one was quite sure why a required survey and the deed work were not completed back then.
