City gives wastewater treatment plant the go-ahead
After years of discussion, planning, design work, grant applications and politicking for funding, the Glencoe City Council finally gave construction of a wastewater treatment plant the go-ahead Monday night.
The plant will use the existing site south of Highway 212 and west of Morningside Drive along Buffalo Creek and also build new buildings on the site. The original facility and its equipment were built and installed in 1956 and updated in 1971 and again in 1992.
“Mechanically, we need some help. We need to get things up to the 21st Century,” said Gary Schreifels, director of Glencoe Public Works and its wastewater treatment plant.
The council voted 4-1 in favor of awarding the project to Rice Lake Construction Group of Deerwood, Minn. at the Nov. 19 meeting. Rice Lake Construction Group submitted the low base bid of $20,110,400 and alternate prices for roof repair of a building for $325,000 and work on doors and windows for $70,000. Robeck opposed awarding the contract. He wanted to see local contractors benefit from the work on doors and windows and possibly save the city some money.
