City planning commission backs plan for electric co-op

After months of discussion and behind-the-scenes work on the sale of land and its annexation into Glencoe, the city’s planning and zoning commission gave its blessing to the plat for the new McLeod Coop Power facility Thursday night.
The endorsement of the plat at the commission’s Feb. 14 meeting was promptly forwarded to the city council’s meeting last night, Feb. 19. The Glencoe City Council met last night, and not its regular Monday night meeting, because of the federal holiday.
There were no objections to the proposed plat at a public hearing the planning commission held Feb. 14, according to meeting minutes.
The proposed plat, once OK’d by the city council, will allow the co-op to build a new facility on the eastern side of Glencoe, between East 11th Street and the TC&W railroad tracks on land it acquired from Donald and Jean Gruenhagen.
The plan the council OK’d in October calls for the city to sell McLeod Cooperative Power the 3.38-acre parcel and the adjacent 6.63-acre lot in the eastern industrial park for $211,000. The city’s net income from the sale is $145,000.
Carrie Buckley, the co-op’s general manager, said last fall the co-op needs the space for its equipment and staff to operate efficiently. The co-op doesn’t have adequate space at its facility on North Ford Avenue in the northwestern section of downtown Glencoe. The purchase and plat approval were orchestrated to keep the co-op and its staff in the city.
Mining comment period
The planning commission took no action and offered no comment on a proposed conditional-use permit for a mining operation on farmland along Hilton Avenue, south of Highway 212. The planning commission recognized the comment period at its Feb. 14 meeting.
The McLeod County Planning Commission held a comment period on the proposed CUP until yesterday, Feb. 19. The proposal is for aggregate to be harvested from the final segment of an existing mine so the property can be returned to farmland. The county planning commission is considering the proposal before making a recommendation to the McLeod County Board.
