City trades TC&W railroad crossings at Union Avenue, Morningside Drive

Glencoe city councilors formalized a longstanding plan to exchange an improved railroad crossing for an unimproved one Monday night.
The city council passed a resolution at the Oct. 15 council meeting to close the Union Avenue crossing at the Twin Cities & Western Railroad tracks crossing as soon as a new crossing is completed at Morningside Drive. City Administrator Mark Larson said the crossing at Union Avenue is not safe, though he is unaware of any crashes at the crossing. Larson said the approaches to the crossing are too steep.
“They would not be built like that today,” he said.
The crossing at Morningside will cost about $4.96 million. The city's share is about $1.17 million, said City Engineer John Rodeberg of Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. Money from the state and county are covering the rest of the cost. The crossing will have flashing lights, bells and arms to discourage vehicles from crossing the tracks in front of oncoming trains.
