Clarification on jail bids

Bids were opened this Thursday on the proposed McLeod County Jail expansion and security project, and appear to b be under estimated costs.

The County Board had been looking at a budget of just over $6 million for the construction costs of the project, with a total estimated cost of $7.99 million with architectural and construction management fees, contingencies, and alternates on top of the construction costs. John McNamara of Wold Architecture said that unofficial tally on the construction bids is around $5.4 million, but added that Contegrity Group, the construction manager, will be compiling bids, doing some verification. It appears that if all the low bids are accepted, the project will cost about $600,000 less than anticipated.

"We'll be making a full presentation to the County Board Tuesday, but it does appear that the bids are under budget," said McNamara.

The County Board scaled back the project and hired the construction manager after its original proposal came in nearly $2 million over buget about a year ago.

McNamara, Contegrity Group representatives, three county board members and a host of contractors sat in on the bid opening, which included bids in 24 different categories.
