CodeRED can alert residents to incidents

The tornado in Lester Prairie the evening of Wednesday Aug. 16, serves as a reminder that homes and businesses in McLeod County can be notified about damaging weather and other incidents that can strike.
McLeod County Emergency Management Director Kevin Mathews recommends that residents have multiple ways of getting a warning. One of the ways is to sign up for the CodeRED weather warning. This is a free service to all residents within McLeod County. Severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flash floods are all possible when a major weather event impacts our community and CodeRED weather warning provides automated warnings for each immediately after an alert has been issued by the National Weather Service..
Those who have already enrolled to receive CodeRED Weather Warnings but have recently moved or changed telephone numbers are encouraged to visit the McLeod County website at www.co.
mcleod.mn.us and click on ‘CodeRED’ in the Quick Links section of the main page to update their contact information. Because the CodeRED weather warning system is so advanced, often delivering warnings before they are broadcast on local media outlets, only those citizens within the direct path of the storm will be contacted. This means that you will not get a storm notification unless you are in the area.
Those without Internet access may call McLeod County Emergency Management at 320-864-1339 Monday through Friday (days) to subscribe to receive CodeRED Weather Warnings by supplying their information over the phone.
