Committee recommends denial of variance

On Monday afternoon, the city of Glencoe’s Personnel and Legislative Committee chose to uphold the planning commission’s recommendation to deny Jerry Scharpe’s request for variance on his garage’s vertical metal siding.
Scharpe and his wife were present at the meeting.
The situation was originally brought before the Glencoe Planning Commission on July 13. It was then sent to the July 17 City Council meeting where it was voted to bring it to the Personnel and Legislative Committee in order to further investigate the laws, ordinances and state codes involved in the situation.
At Monday’s meeting, two issues were addressed and discussed; first, that Scharpe did not carry out his original plan for his garage (for which he received a building permit) and built a different garage without finishing the process of picking up or paying for the second building permit and, secondly, that the vertical metal siding goes against a city ordinance.
Because Scharpe never paid for or picked up his second permit, none of the necessary inspections for the garage had been made at this point.
Scott Qualle of MNSPECT was present at the meeting to offer information about the state code for inspections and building within the city limits.
