Congratulations Class of 2019 - Our view: Make the most of whatever path you choose

Friday evening, about 135 seniors will graduate from Glencoe-Silver Lake High School. Congratulations to you all. Whether or not it seems like a big deal, you have all accomplished something special.
You get to begin the journey into the rest of your life. You have been prepared for the journey so make the most of it.
Some of you will enter the workforce; some will perhaps enter military service. Most of you will advance to some form of post-secondary education. We wish you the best as you continue your education.
Whatever the path you choose, remember it is no crime to be uncertain of your future. Most of you are or will soon be 18 years old. We shouldn’t expect you to have your life’s path set in concrete. Take the time to find a path in life that satisfies your interests, your dreams and your goals. Be satisfied with where you are and what you’re doing with your life. There are too many unhappy people out there so be happy. Have fun.
Your school and your community have worked hard to prepare you for the next chapter in your journey. Your schoolteachers and administrators the past dozen or so years have tried to make sure you were offered the tools to make the best possible decisions. You grew up in a time when tests were a tool to measure your abilities. But you are so much more than the results of a test.
You have benefited from the support of a community that wants you to succeed and help make your hometown proud of your accomplishments, regardless of your path, both now and in the future. The community supported after-prom parties to keep you safe. The mock crash event, regardless of what it seemed like at the time, was held to show you the importance of smart choices.
As Dr. Seuss wrote, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And you are the one who'll decide where to go...”
You are ready to begin the journey, whatever it may be. Make the most of it. Enjoy and own it everyday.
And when your schooling is done, remember your hometown. If the stars line up right, no matter what path you choose after graduation, Glencoe and the surrounding communities are a great place to call home. If life’s circumstances work out, this is a good place to live and raise a family. Your parents thought so.
Here’s another wish for you, don’t forget your classmates. There will be opportunities to maintain friendships a dozen or more years in the making. Sure, you’ll meet new friends in the years to come. You’ll probably meet lifetime friends and maybe even a partner. There’s comfort in familiarity.
Congratulations GSL’s Class of 2019. Enjoy the day. You’ve earned it.
