Controlled burn helps young firefighters learn
They can’t wait to graduate from the blue firefighter trainee helmets to the regular black helmets their certified brethren wear when they respond to a call for help.
Glencoe firefighters Jose Villanueva and Collin Gustafson and 13 other trainees from several other area fire departments took part in a training drill Saturday, June 8, in Helen Township, between Plato and Glencoe. The training exercise was intended to provide young firefighters the live fire training needed to graduate from trainee status to firefighter and give experienced firefighters a refresher to hone their skills.
“The guys on our department and all these departments are all very well trained. They’ve been there and they know. This is an opportunity to ask them questions, to learn from their experience in a controlled setting,” Gustafson said.
