Council’s decision impacts local liquor vendors

To the Editor:
Once again, it’s read about after the decision has been made. Reference to the City Council action of Aug. 3, 2015, as reported in The McLeod County Chronicle — Glencoe Wine and Spirits as the exclusive bar provider at the Glencoe City Center.
If we eliminate the rhetoric and conclusions that have been reached, the effect is not simply on Dubbs Grill and Bar, but rather on all vendors and users of the Glencoe City Center venue. Decisions and recommendations are being made by individuals with limited or no food and beverage experience.
The city of Glencoe left the on-sale liquor business in 1985. Now, as exclusive vendor, they are back in the business. Prices can be set at their discretion for anyone that uses their venue — no competition. Those of us who were here when the City Center was established remember that it was sold to the public by stating that it would enhance local business. By becoming the exclusive provider, is this enhancement?
As for events running more smoothly, when city staff is involved, who is providing this information, or is it simply lip service? We at Dubbs have been told, “we’re glad to see you guys working the bar.” We work with the city staff, not separate from them. We have cleaned tables, taken out garbage, stacked chairs and other general clean-up. In addition, the clean-up of the bar equipment that was used by a previous vendor.
It would appear that we are dealing with a stacked deck, in more ways than one. Perhaps the city has already eliminated the competition by its marketing technique of not charging a 15 percent user fee. I’m sure that collecting 100 percent of sales looks better on the books, rather than 15 percent user fee from vendors.
