County Board amends CUP for gravel mining

A conditional use permit (CUP) for mining an existing gravel site in Bergen Township near Lester Prairie was approved by McLeod County Commissioners at the June 2 meeting after some tweaks were made to appease protesting residents.
Another CUP at the same site that includes production of hot mix asphalt was tabled because it was not made clear in the notice to residents. Another public hearing will be conducted in this case but the application fees will be waived.
Planning and Zoning Administrator Larry Gasow asked for board approval of the CUP requested by Duininck, Inc., from Prinsburg for the purpose to mine and excavate gravel and granular materials including stockpiling, crushing, screening and recycling of concrete in Section 12 of Bergen Township.
The Bergen Township Board recommended approval on May 14 and the McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission recommended approval on May 27 after a public hearing.
Several conditions were included, such as changing the requested hours of operation of 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday to 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
After several residents spoke against the permit, commissioners changed the condition for operation from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. They did agree to allow mining operations from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays if needed and if given permission by the county.
