County Board changes Trailblazer representation

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday to replace Commissioner Ron Shimanski as a representative on the Trailblazer Transit Joint Powers Board.
The board took up a motion that had been tabled from its Jan. 3 meeting, in which Commissioner Doug Krueger moved that he and commissioners Joe Nagel and Rich Pohlmeier be appointed to the joint powers board.
At the Jan. 3 meeting, Shimanski (who cast the dissenting vote Tuesday morning) said there had long been a “gentlemen’s agreement” that only one commissioner who represents the Hutchinson area be on the joint powers board.
At yesterday’s meeting, Krueger said that while there may have been such an agreement in place at one time, the composition of Trailblazer has changed with the introduction of Wright County communities into the system through the Wright County Area Transit (WCAT) coalition.
Shimanski said he has served on the Trailblazer board for four years, and feels he can bring valuable experience back to the board. He noted a long list of accomplishments of Trailblazer — from its growth in ridership, its expansion into Wright County, the construction of a new facility in Buffalo and the fact that it operated in the black in 2015.
