County Board declines to hire HHW manager

A‚Äąproposal to hire a manager for McLeod County’s household hazardous waste (HHW) facility failed on a 3-2 vote Tuesday, June 21.
The county’s staffing committee recommended approving the new position, rather than hire a HHW technician. The resignation of a technician is what brought the matter before the staffing committee.
Commissioners Doug Krueger and Ron Shimanski, who are the board’s representatives on the committee, said staffing at the facility has been shorthanded, particularly in light of the resignation several months ago of the solid waste department’s director. Since then, Sarah Young, the solid waste coordinator, also has assumed acting director duties.
Commissioner Sheldon Nies said that the board needs to look first at the structure of the department before it creates a new position.
“My question is, if we have the right structure in place, is that position even needed?” asked Nies. “We need to start getting our structure in place first, and then look at what we need.”
Nies said the board needs to step up and “make that commitment to the process … to start putting people into place for the jobs that need to be done.”
