County Board votes to expand scope of emergency warning system

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners voted to improve the scope of how residents are warned in case of emergencies at its June 16 meeting.
Emergency Management Director Kevin Mathews asked the board to approve the Integrated Public Alert Warning System (IPAWS) Addendum for the CodeRED mass notification system.
The wireless system is from Emergency Communications Network, LLC, costing $2,500, with funding coming from a regional emergency management grant.
This will be effective until Dec. 31, 2015. The cost in future years is based on the number of counties that subscribe to IPAWS. As of June there are about 20 counties. Emergency Management has been told that grant money will be available to cover the cost through 2016.
“This system is a way to do a mass notification to each and every member of the public in a variety of different ways,” said Mathews. “With our CodeRED we have the capability to notify the people that opt into the system. Out of the 36,000 population we have there are about 12,600 signed up for CodeRED and 1,800 are signed up for the weather warning. We are only reaching a certain percentage of our county.”
