County considers private firm to run recycling programs

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners will be seeking requests for proposals (RFPs) from private firms to manage its materials recovery facility (MRF), which takes in recyclable goods.
The board met as the Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) on Wednesday, Dec. 21, where it heard from Sarah Young, solid waste coordinator, that the facility had been approached by a private company regarding operating the MRF.
“We’ve had a lot of internal dicussion about this, and we think it’s worth looking into, for several reasons,” said Young.
First, the MRF has seen significant growth, particularly since the county switched to a no-sort recycling system from a five-sort system. And, said Young, out-of-county companies and governments also are looking to McLeod County as a recycling center.
