County decides to hire full-time health director

After trying to fill the vacant public health director position in a different way, McLeod County commissioners went back to the drawing board to have business as usual.
The board had voted to hire a lesser involved deputy public health director to lead the department until options are examined, including possibly combining the director position with another county.
However, at the April 7 board meeting, Commissioner Sheldon Nies said the county has advertised for a deputy position but has been unable to fill it. Human Resource Director Mary Jo Wieseler said the position was offered to someone who decided not to take it. No applicants came from internally. Wieseler said she is looking for another plan of attack.
Nies made a motion to send the issue back to the personnel committee asking it to fill the head public health department position as it was before. He said there is too much uncertainty with the future of the deputy position.
Commissioner Ron Shimanski said there is a meeting planned with Meeker County to discuss the possibility of merging department heads. Nies said that would take a long time, adding “we can deal with that when it comes up, but the big department needs a leader now.”
