County DFLers choose officers, hear candidate

McLeod County DFL’ers gathered Sunday afternoon in Hutchinson for their annual convention, hearing from Minnesota Senate candidate Amy Wilde, as well as considering resolutions and appointing delegates to future events.
Wilde, a former Meeker County Commissioner, is vying for the Minnesota Senate District 18 seat currently held by Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson.
Although she has not been a state official, Wilde said she has been on the “front line” of state issues because of her position on the county board.
“I call it the front line because counties deliver the services funded by the state, with the exception of education,” said Wilde.
Wilde said she also is familiar with educational issues, though, because she was a school beat reporter for the Dassel-Cokato Enterprise-Dispatch.
“So I do have some understanding of school funding,” said Wilde.
She also said she has developed good “name recognition” through her position on the county board, because she sat on committees that were multi-county or regional, such as the Pioneerland Library board and Meeker-McLeod-Sibley health services board.
One of the issues Wilde hopes to tackle at the state level is providing rural broadband Internet access.
“Service is very spotty in rural Minnesota,” said Wilde. “I hope to get it all across the state. It’s a big job builder.”
She also wants to develop a comprehensive transportation bill with a steady mechanism for funding.
“We just saw gas prices jump 40 cents a gallon, and not one penny of that is going to fix our roads,” said Wilde. And if the state does not want to raise the gas tax, “then we need to do something else without taking money away from our elderly or our schools.”
