County hires consultant for new compensation study

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners will move foward with a compensation and classification study at a cost not to exceed $28,000.
The County Board voted to proceed at its Sept. 16 meeting.
The study will evaluate current county job descriptions and the compensation attached to each.
The County Board received three proposals, from Fox Lawson & Associates of St. Paul; Springsted, Inc., also of St. Paul; and Keystone Compensation Group of Minneapolis.
The County Board heard presentations from all three companies at an earlier workshop, and voted to award the work to Keystone.
Commissioner Sheldon Nies said the County Board has discussed a compensation and classification study for “three or four years” and the time has come to follow through.
“We need to bring this to a head one way or another,” said Nies. “The first thing we have to do is get the job descriptions right.”
Nies said the duties of many jobs had evolved in the many years since the last study.
Board Chair Paul Wright said that many employees are concerned that the County Board will get the results of the study, and then defer implementing any changes.
“Once we commit to this, we have to live up to it and follow through with recommendations,” said Wright. “We have to realize that once we do this, there will be dollars involved with getting it implemented.”
