County leaves assessing fee at same rate on split vote

McLeod County will not be lowering the cost it charges for assessing property for taxing purposes in 2017.
A motion at Tuesday’s McLeod County Board meeting to lower the cost to $8.50 per parcel from the current charge of $10.50 per parcel failed on a 3-2 vote.
The lowering of— or even eliminating — the fee has been a topic for several months, mostly recently at a county board workshop.
The issue of perhaps eliminating the fee was first raised by Assessor Sue Schulz about year ago. Schulz said that charging cities and townships for assessing properties was essentially double charging property owners, because they were already paying property taxes to the county, and the cities or townships in which they reside are also levying to pay for the assessment fees.
