County looks at County Road 54 fixes

McLeod County commissioners took a first step to fix the poor road conditions on County Road 54 between County Road 87 and County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 7 near Lake Marion.
A new road resurfacing process used on the four-mile stretch of road last year did not work out and ways to improve the road quality have been sought ever since.
Assistant Highway Engineer Phil Schmalz came to the June 2 board meeting with quotes for installation of drain tile on the stretch of road to help with stabilization. The board accepted the low bid of $46,825 from Vreeman Construction of Clara City. There will be 25 tile outlets in this project.
Commissioner Paul Wright said fixing the water bog problem on County Road 54 has to be part of the repair plan. Wright added how if this work can be done by July 4, then a stabilization project can be bid.
“The reason we want to do this is to find a process that will work for other roads in the county,” said Schmalz. “It would cost too much to construct a new road.”
Commissioners agreed they did not want to put a bandage on the road, but are looking for a long-term solution.
