County looks at grant options for solid waste

McLeod County is looking at buying a refurbished grinder to process ag plastic, contingent on grant funding from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).
The County Board approved purchasing the grinder at a cost of $215,500 from Rotochopper of St. Martin.
Sarah Young, acting solid waste director, said the county qualifies for an MPCA grant that has a 75 percent state/25 percent local cost share. In order to maximize receiving 75 percent from the MPCA, the county will have to have a total project cost of about $240,000, Young said. She said the difference could be made up through outreach programs, or in-kind labor for the equipment.
Commissioner Paul Wright said the county could consider buying a new baler, but a new one isn’t necessary.
