County may become regional hub for recyling ag bags, boat wrap
McLeod County Solid Waste is considering accepting two materials for recycling at its materials recovery facility (MRF) — ag bags and boat wrap.
The Solid Waste Advisory Committee (which currently consists of the McLeod County Board of Commissioners) heard about both at a meeting Wednesday, Jan. 20.
Sarah Young, acting solid waste director, said that a meeting has been set up for today (Wednesday) with legislators, county commissioners and officials from neighboring counties about ag bags — the plastic bags that hold seed and feed.
According to Young, McLeod County’s MRF could become a regional center for collecting and recycling the bags.
In addition, Don Hopp, MRF manager, said the county has been approached about being a collection site for boat wrap — the shrink plastic that is used for protecting boats in the winter months so that they can be stored outside.
“It looks as if we can collect up to 150 tons per year,” said Hopp. He added that there is a “corridor” from southeast of St. Cloud up along I94 to the northwestern part of the state from which the wrap would be collected.
