County Planning Commission gives nod to permit for mining

The McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission took an application for a mining conditional use permit that was a bit unusual at its Wednesday, Jan. 28, meeting.
Rather than mining for gravel or sand, brothers Shane and Brett Madsen want to dig up an old demolition landfill in Rich Valley Township, reduce the slope of the property, and restore the land for farming.
“It’s potentially a win-win  proposal,” Zoning Administrator Larry Gasow told the commission.
Gasow said the Madsens want to dig out the landfill, which comprises about 11 acres of a 34.64-acre tract. The clay used in the demolition landfill will be reclaimed and used by Spruce Ridge Landfill, which also will take any fill material from the Madsen site. Any contaminated material also will be taken by Spruce Ridge, but then properly disposed of in another Waste Management site.
