Cross-Country teams sweep season opener

The Glencoe-Silver Lake cross-country teams got their seasons started in earnest in much the same way they did last year, on a damp morning at Baylor Regional Park in the annual “alumni meet.”
It was a successful start to the new year for both the Panther boys’ and girls’ squads as GSL took first place in both competitions.
Malayh Metcalf and Maddie Lemke paced the girls’ to a team victory by finishing 1-2 individually in respective times of 21 minutes, nine seconds and 21:19. Ellie Schmidt placed fourth in 23:05, followed by Abigale Boetel in eighth at 24:27 and Majkya Metcalf in 10th at 24:51.
With 25 points, the Panther girls finished first by 20 points over Norwood Young America.
The GSL boys did not have an individual victor, but the squad did sweep the 2-5 positions en route to claiming a team win by a 48-point margin over NYA with 21 points.
Connor Hallaway led the boys with a second-place finish in a time of 18:21; Jakob Rusten was close behind with a third-place time of 18:24. Tony Fischer was fourth in 18:43, while early race leader Zack Herout was fifth in 18:49. AJ Anderson Sanchez rounded out GSL’s run with an eighth-place time of 19:29.
Season-opening victories in hand, the GSL CC squads are now off until after Labor Day, when both teams travel to Montgomery National Golf Course for an invitational meet on Thursday, Sept. 7.
